940 Quick RMS question

If oil leaks right from and around this area between block and transmission, it?s very likely a leaky RMS, right? Always have 1 small drip on the driveway over night and some oil sweat around that area (wiped it off before the photo).

After having ruled out the entire PCV system, I probably can?t get around replacing the RMS by a mechanic (due to my lack of proper lifting equipment and space).

Thanks.

(photo might be huge due to posting from my phone, apologies if so)

At that location it's probably a leaking rear main seal.
But it can also come from above (valve cover gasket or distributor shaft seal).

Both are easy to rule out. Just wipe a white cloth over the back of the cilinder head to see if the oil is coming from the distributor or valve cover gasket.

Get an OEM rear main seal. They last much longer than the aftermarket stuff.
And inspect the clutch if you have the gearbox off. It could be a good idea to replace the clutch now.

Regards, Mark

Appreciate your comment, I can rule out the valve cover and distributor as I've looked at them before.

Yeah, I've read about only using OEM on the RMS. For the small cost of that gasket, it doesn't make sense to cheap out on this.

Good idea about the clutch. It works very well but I don't know when or if it was last changed, so it makes sense to replace while the gearbox is off.

It is smart to just use the OEM seal. It's enough of a pain of a job to just spend a little extra.

Is this car turbo? Could be leaking from the oil return or sandwich plate or something as well.

Yeah, sorry it's a Turbo w/ M90. I did indeed check the turbo oil return and the oil filter relocator and I do not see anything suspicious there.

That being said, everything points to the rear main seal I guess.

Thanks for your comments.

I vote OEM seal too. mine came with a cool "tool" to help install it. but the cost was not light...around 50 bucks from my dealer. ive always read victor reinz and what not become brittle after several thousand miles

Are you sure it was a tool and not a sleeve for the crankshaft?

I'm not certain, it held the spring loaded edges back so you can slide the seal over the crank. once started I removed the plastic ring surrounding the seal (<--- the "tool") and slid it into place...I think i have a pic...
