Hello Guest, welcome to the initial stages of our new platform! You can find some additional information about where we are in the process of migrating the board and setting up our new software here
While you're replacing the WP it would be a good time to inspect the timing belt and tensioner and replace if needed; also consider changing the front crank seal, cam seal and balance shaft seal. Yeah, it's a bit of work but worth it if you plan on keeping the car for awhile.
I don't remove the hard pipe which attaches to the rear of the WP; I do put some silicone lube on both the pipe's O-ring and the place it bolts to on the WP.

I'm a fairly competent shade tree mechanic but I've reached an impasse as to improving the performance of my '86 740 Turbo.
Can anybody direct me to a guy / shop in or near Portland, Oregon with a deep understanding of this car and the ability to diagnose fairly subtle performance issues?

I regret that Chilton and Haynes no longer seem to make DIY repair manuals for newer cars.
Are there any companies making printed manuals for newer cars, or is it all online stuff from the mfr. these days?
