Hello Guest, welcome to the initial stages of our new platform! You can find some additional information about where we are in the process of migrating the board and setting up our new software here
They are Bilsteins, NOS marked ”West Germany”.
Looking at this picture it seems I’m only missing the washer underneath the top nut. What is that plate next to the upper spring perch?
So I’m assembling a set of front struts for the 245. I had a set of empty strut tubes laying around and got some new shocks, springs and topmounts.
Just wanted to confirm I’m not missing any washers or other small parts here.
Shock - dustboot - spring - upper spring perch - top mount - nut...
The trans is actually slightly overfilled (seeps out when I remove the fill plug).
Those are some good tips there, thanks. I’ll try to do some more troubleshooting on a cold morning. :)
I changed the whole axle assembly.
It doesn’t sound like wheel bearings at all, I know what those sound like. More of a humming growl but this is more like gear whine. It does not change when turning left or right. I’ve also repacked and tightened the front wheel bearings.
Hey, good point! I’ll try it without the roofrack on. It didn’t have one when it started howling but it’s been on since I swapped the axle. :-)
I wouldn’t be surprised if the oil I drained was original, 35 y/o 150k mile oil. There was something in there at least but it was pretty black.
Yeah, I’ve been doing those kinds of tests over the last 10000 miles or so, except for number 4.
As I said, it does not change at all with engine speed or gear. Only with vehicle speed, getting louder the faster I go. But it’s kind of intermittent and sort of comes and goes as I drive along.
I...
Looking for some more armchair mechanics!
My M47 240 has had a high-pitched howl that increases with speed for the last five years or so. It’s hard to hear where the sound is coming from since the whole wagon interior acts like a resonance box.
It’s usually when it’s cold outside, and only for...
Yeah well the car was sitting outside at work under a layer of snow for a few weeks. I then brought it in to let it thaw but it was in the way so I had to bring it outside again an hour later. I then pulled it in for another hour or so before I had to move it again, which is when it just...
Alright so the car is running again. Thanks for all the suggestions! I didn’t read them all in time but it may help someone else.
It ended up being the ignition computer that failed. Unfortunately I can’t be helpful in how to diagnose this since I just started swapping parts with known good...
I have 12v at the injectors and 12v at the positive coil terminal.
I measured all three CPS and they all showed ~170Ohm between pin 1 and 2 which should be good.
There’s a quick spark from the lead going from the coil to the cap right as I turn the key, then nothing. What does this mean? Shouldn’t there be a constant current to the cap with the ignition on?
I inspected both the flywheel and dizzy shaft and both are spinning as they should while cranking.
I also peeled back the boot on the CPS connector and inspected the pins and wiring and it all looked good.
So my 240 has been sitting and suddenly died when I was moving it. Charged up the battery but it just cranks. The CPS sensor had some chafed wiring so I replaced that with an old OEM one but that didn’t do anything. I tried another no-name one from the parts store but no difference. I also tried...
Pulled apart my B23 that had been sitting outdoors for a few years. Cyl 3 had a bit of rust in it but it still turned over freely. I put some vinegar in the bore and let it sit for a day or two and most of the rust wiped off. The bearings look... old. But not spun.
What do you guys think? Would...
