I will be interested to see how this ends up because despite your combustion leak test giving you the all clear, this has every classic symptom of a head gasket or cylinder head failure, including the previous radiator failing (can we assume it failed catastrophically? That is, ruptured?)

Does it change at all if you switch HVAC modes? Wondering if it's a vacuum motor failing and in a constant state of open / close. Just a shot in the dark.

Lseat came back with a reply that linked back to their '86+ covers. When I responded to let them know that I needed the earlier style, their reply was, "Please inform us that you need it for 85 early generations on the checkout page." SO, I think I will give that a try here in the next month...
