I have a bunch of pics, but here are just a few. The original plan was to go with the b234 block, but now I am going b230 block for several reasons. I have a VW timing belt tensioner from a 1990 GTI 16v on order. This is a timing belt from a 1994 hyundai sonata v6. (it fits the gears perfectly. I have the 16v crank gear and a 3rd 16v cam gear as the auxillary gear application on the 8v.). The turbo is a t3/t4. Stage 3 turbine with .63 A/R housing. Cold side is 50 trim wheel with .50 A/R housing. Other compressor is stock t3 .48 A/R housing.

I want some other tbrickers to go 16v too!! I know you LA guys can get the heads cheap, if you dont have them already.

hey guidom...is that manifold strong enough to hold the weight of the turbo by itself? or does it need a support bracket too? i cant wait to see how it performs when its all swaped in and running, should be VERY potent

I have a nice clean b234 block that I cleaned for about 3 hours. The 8v block just got ripped out of my 1990 740 and I was going to store it. However, since piston cuts might not be required (we'll find out when I get my tensioner riggged) I am going with the 8.5 CR turbo block instead of the 10.0 CR b234 pistons. I cant afford race gas everyday. I am going to clean the block and put new rings in it and hone the cyl walls. I might put in new main and crank bearings.

The mani was from a tbrick member who said it is new from volvo. I am not planning on running brackets, but it wont hurt. Check out the 16v thread below by 84b23ft and I posted some links to euro sources for the manifold. Here is the link: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?p=242850#post242850

Nobody has noticed that I dont have a wastegate yet.... i dont even know if an internal diaphram will fit between the turbo and the block. I've got an audi 5000 external that I might run. I was thinking of putting it on the mani right above the turbo at the collector.

turbo isnt clocked either [/nitpick]

That brings up a point i wanted to mention. Can I have the center section oriented like that. I put it that way because the drain will now point directly at the hole in the block. I havent researched if it is a no no to have the drain angled like that. Probably is.

The mani was bought by a tbrick member and he didnt end up using it. It is brand new. If the person who sourced it (active tbricker) wants to give up his source he will post it. He didnt tell me when I asked.

Here is a guy in the czech republic who told me he doesnt have them in stock, but he can get it in one month. I dont know if that means HE gets it in one month or I get it in one month. Lets hope its the latter. He said 260$ shipped. (rough exhange from euro) If you guys want to do a group buy, it might cut the costs down. However, I will have nothing to do with the organization of it.

But he said somebody else sourced it for him. Wink. Where would you tell people to look for the manifold, Doug?

Damn man!! Thats nice!

Its pretty much the same thing I had going on in my head for my build that will start in a couple months. I have piston slap so its time for a rebuild I figure I should just build it like I want it.

I am planing on building my own exhuast manifold though. My boss is a killer header builder so he might be able to help me.
That one you have is so rare that I think it stops more people from doing the 16V swap. Its a killer swap too.

What made you decide on a T3/T4 turbo? How much boost are you planing on running and how many ponies are you hoping for outta that motor?

is that header originally made for the volvo 16v turbos they had over in europe or is it an n/a header turned upside down?

2.0L 16V turbo sold in europe (italy i think...)

200hp from 2.0L was substantial back then, still is today (tho cars like evo8 make well over 300 on a stock factory turbo from 2.0L...theyre newer tho..yadda

Long story behind the t3/t4. It is brand new and I paid too much for it. My turboford buddy suggested the 50trim compressor was good for an 2.3 8v application. We'll see how it works. I ran a 16g for a while (now dfer 10 has it), but i wanted to go even further off the deep-end. Why not?

The header is for the italian market b204. (16v turbo)

the oil return and feed *must* be perpendicular to the ground for proper oil drainage from the cartridge. if you dont, it fills up with oil and starts leaking out the seals, cokeing the turbo up rapidly and generally pissing you off.

yeah but they use alot more then the 6psi boost the B204 did.

Does anybody have pics of the stock b204 turbo setup? Especially the turbo oil feed, return, and wastegate arrangement. THANKS!!!

16V turbo oil feed/return

16V turbo oil feed and return is not as complex as some would have you believe. The Ovlov.net racecar started life with the factory B204FT manifold as shown at top of this thread, now replaced with a fabricated equal length runner mani jigged to position the turbo in the same location. You've seen the pics at www.ovlov.net The normal wastegate actuator does fit behind the turbo just clearing the block. The factory cast iron manifold perfoms the same up to 5,500rpm, but the custom job revs happily with power to 7,200rpm.
My oil feed is from a brass Tee into the usual spot for the oil pressure gauge switch, with two lines: one for turbo oil feed via braided teflon hose, the other for a calibrated oil pressure gauge in the dash (in the radio slot beside a calibrated boost gauge).
For turbo oil return I use a barb fitting with 2 bolt flange to the underside of the T3/T4 and a 1/4" ID silicon hose with screw hose clamps to a 45* barb tapped into the usual B230 oil return boss on the base of the block. The silicon hose survives about a year in that hot environment. It also has a 90* bend and a slight uphill run - never a problem. The only thing I have never broken on the Ovlov.net racecar is the T3/T4 turbo. I do send it to Garrett for fresh seals at the end of each race season.
Just for interest's sake, I report that my data logging recorded an 8,000rpm event (picked 2nd instead of 4th with the dogbox) and the "last 16V race motor" happily survived the event. Light JE forged pistons probably helped.
