164e V8 Conversion

In case I don't sell my 164e, I have been thinking about a V8 conversion. I have an older 350 small block with a Turbo 400 trans sitting in the shop. Anyone know of any info on the conversion? I am just testing the waters with this. Mark

It would require some custom fab either way, probably a bit more for a 2jz or B6304FT (because, well, you're going custom anyway), but I'd have to go straight 6 over an SBC. SBC's are everyday swaps, go for something different. gross polluter has the 2jz in his 245, Nathan has one in his 944, either of them may have ideas on the required mods.

Otherwise for a 350 swap you could probably take a peek at the normal 240 V8 swaps since it's mostly the same, only difference will be the bracketry to secure the block itself.

Replace I6 engine with better I6 engine.

I.e. 2JZ.

Already own the sweet little v8. If it doesnt sell, I am thinking conversion, lowered, and color change to black. Probably take awhile.....as I am building an engine for the T5 and its first in line.

No, the diesel sounds like;

But the 2JZ is even sweeter.

All in all, the cost of the motor is a small part of a swap. Don't be too constrained by what you already have laying around.

Hey Blue/Mark,
Lots of Videos on the ol' interwebs but not a lot of build threads. There are a couple of V8 164 cars over at BrickBoard I think.

I owned an '83 245 with a 302 and it was GREAT. Always little odd bits to take care of but it always worked and spun tires.

I bet the SBC weighs less than that B30 and if you run a carb it should be an 'easy' install.

The only problems I can see are your local emissions requirements for a 1975 and the width of your engine bay. That double A arm front end eats up a lot of engine space. The SBC will fit down there but you'll need some very low pro headers.

There are probably more 140 V8 installs out there. Just about the same situation but you get more room for cooling and AC

Maybe grab a JTR book for inspiration?

I would love to run a B6304/ auto setup in a 164. Mikes wagon made 186whp with nothing but a stock motor, 2.5" exhaust, cold air intake and MS2. That was with the small cams and tuning by me and my butt-dyno.
That would keep in Volvo, and you can find 960s all over the place for cheap.

Or there's always the option of +T'ing the B30 that's in it now. Something definitely different, way cool, and being a 75 with no smog, the door is open to just about anything. Should be an 8-bolt crank so pistons and rods are easy, get some custom porting on the head, Grab a cam from one of the swed shops, custom intake and exhaust, throw a T5 or T56 behind it, LSD in it, MS it, and party.

Or how about something utterly impractical. Replace the I6 with... .two I6's!

Some sort of V12. Jag lumps are horribly heavy, and not too powerful in return. But maybe a BMW V12? They were white elephants (like the Jag V12's) but perhaps with a nice new MS running you'll avoid some of the black box ECU mystery?

Just saying, you have the looong engine bay, might as well put a looong motor in it!

Looks like the BMW V12 in the Impala. The Jag V12's just aren't worth the trouble -- unless you just have to have a V12.

"Otherwise for a 350 swap you could probably take a peek at the normal 240 V8 swaps since it's mostly the same, only difference will be the bracketry to secure the block itself." The 240 has strut front suspension; the 140/160 has upper/lower A-arms that make things much tighter for exhaust.

I wouldn't +T on a pushrod redblock, too much fabrication and squeezing it in.

I would however say that a nice refreshed B30 could go a long way by itself. I've driven a '74 162GL that has a 12:1 compression blueprinted and balanced motor that pushed over 250 hp with a modified D-Jet computer.
You may get more torque out of the SBC V8 but nothing as smooth except a B6304S

Honestly the only real fab work is an exhaust manifold. Cam's are available, bottom-end stuff is available, porting the head is just cast iron instead of aluminum, the intake would work for the time being at least. That would really only leave the need to deal with a trans, unless an M410 can be found, then that's not even a worry. A nice 9:1 pushrod with the right work and 10psi or so would be more than enough to cause trouble in, in a car as sleeperish as a 164. :)
