My 1984 242 Turbo started misfiring after replacing vacuum hoses, engine harness and cleaning regulator (CPR).
This car has been a nightmare (still love it though). Since I purchased it i've been fixing just about everything.
First thing was a bad fuel pump relay. The previous owner would jump the relay contacts to use it. -fixed-
It idled at 1500-1800. The idle bypass valve hose was not connected. they plugged the hose inlet. -fixed-
Fuse #13 was bad so the idle control was not helping either. -fixed-
The car would not accelerate good. It barely reaches 55mph
Found a wrong fuel pump with no check valve. -fixed-
Then he started running much better, but starting became an issue. I would have to try about 20-25 time for it to start. once warm it starts and ran ok. I always noticed the vacuum gauge close to the yellow(not much vacuum) so i decided to replace all the vacuum hoses.
I discovered the flame trap was disconnected from the elbow on the turbos inlet side. It was plugged. Mess of oil all over the engine on driver side. -fixed-
The wiring harness was a mess with splices all over so I also replaced it at the same time I replaced the vacuum hoses. I also cleaned the pressure regulator replaced the injector o rings.

The car started up immediately. I was impressed. It idled nice and accelerated (in neutral nicely). vacuum gauge was much better on the dark side (hi vac). So I decided to try her on the road. Put it in Drive, accelerated and the engine dies. It feels like its being flooded.
I checked the injectors and two atomize the fuel perfectly, the other two, fuel just prays out in an uneven pattern. Tried cleaning them, still uneven spray pattern. and the car dies upon acceleration. I played with the fuel mixture now it idles ruff.

Any suggestions?

How did you try cleaning the injectors? I just stick the little straw into them and spray the B12 Chemtool through them. Cleans them up right away. You could always replace them if needed.

There shouldn't be any flame trap on a turbo car, only the hose that goes over to the intake by the air box.

I haven't touched the timing bet.
The injectors were cleaned with carburetor cleaner inserting the little tube and spraying them
Plugs are relatively new less than two weeks.
I did adjust the fuel distributor.

I'm thinking I did something with the pressure regulator since I disassembled it for cleaning.

Thanks for the inputs,

Vic

Well I removed and inspected the regulator again. It looks perfect inside, all clean, diaphragm is nice and shiny and resistance test is in specs. Re-installed and did basic adjustments to fuel distributor and throttle. It seems worse now with very bad idle. Tested idle bypass valve --tested good.
I removed spark plugs and the were nasty black, so I cleaned them and dropped one between the oil filer and pressure switch. Engine too hot to get my hands in there. Will continue tomorrow.

Happy Fathers Day

Sounds like your on the right path. Those injectors need to be perfect so keep cleaning them till they have a perfect spray pattern or get new ones.

Try and check fp too.

What about just the simple CO% idle mixture adjustment on the fuel distributor? If this was messed with to get it running right while there were large vacuum leaks, who knows, it could be way off.

Let me provide the complete history.

This 84 242 GLT i purchased about 6 months ago was a mess.
It idled at 1700-2000 rpm
No boost under acceleration

Here are my findings.

Idle bypass valve was removed and ports plugged
Fuse for the Lambda/CIS was blown
Fuel pump relay was hardwired to activate pump always
Engine harness was a mess and poorly repaired
crankcase ventilation hose to intake elbow missing (plugged at elbow)
waste gate was adjusted to ZERO boost
All vacuum hoses seemed original and were rotten and/orbroken
Leaked through the injector O rings
Incorrect fuel pump (newer model from an LH system)
Missing O2 sensor

What I've fixed/replaced:

Idle pass valve installed
Replaced fuse ((Idle circuit now working) 800 rpm
Replaced fuel pump relay
Replaced engine harness
Replaced all vacuum hoses
Replaced Fuel injector O rings
Replaced manifold gasket
Installed crankcase ventilation hose
Adjusted waste gate per service manual
Disassembled, inspected and cleaned the warmup regulator (CPR). It seems very nice and clean.
Cleaned and tested injectors - nice spray pattern
New fuel filter installed
removed/replaced old air filter KN installed
spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor replaced
Brand new correct fuel pump

After all this I turned the ignition and it started immediately, nice idle. When I test drive, under acceleration it stumbles under load as soon as the boost picks up. It felt like too rich mixture - I adjusted the fuel distributor in both directions. no improvement.
Checked the turbo over pressure switch- good

Still missing the O2 sensor. wire is just not connected to anything.
My most recent attempt was to replace the CPR/WUR with one(079) I purchased on Ebay. Not the same as mine (082), but thought Id give it a try.

THAT FIXED IT.
:) No more stumbling/misfiring.:)

I was already about to give up on the KJet and go with an LH. I ll leave that for the future.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Vic

Wow - quite a story. Hope it hasn't bored you guys.
