1993 245: Timing Belt Install

Hello all,

The belt broke and I'm preparing to install another. First time on a Volvo but have done this on other cars.

By searching here and reading my Bentley Manual, I have a good idea of what marks to align.

My only concern is that I have not found reference (here or in the manual) to a very prominent mark on the front of the crank sprocket in my car.

This prominent mark is opposite the tiny notch on the front timing belt sprocket guide plate when the plate and sprocket are mated.

The crank (and cam) are at TDC (#1) and the rotor points at #1 plug wire. The tiny notch on the front timing belt sprocket guide plate lines up with a prominent mark on the crank oil seal housing. Am I good to go?

Thanks

Marty

Check out Mike Ponte's page for a diagram that might help you out.

Rule of thumb: Crank TDC (crank gear keyway) is along an imaginary line from the center of the crank to the center of the cam. This is about 11:00 since the engine is tilted. You should be able to eyeball the keyway and line it up with the cam CL.

Do not confuse the pulley mark with the crank gear mark, the pulley mark does NOT line up with the cam but with the mark at 12:00 on the plastic TB cover. The dizzy gear mark can be difficult to find it is there on the metal plate ever so slightly before 3:00 but this can be misleading if someone before you installed the T-Belt with the Distr. Gear off a tooth and "fixed" it by rotating the dizzy to retime it. So if it doesn't start and you are sure everything is lined up properly, check your ignition timing.

Get a paint stick and make some bright white marks on the sprockets and the block and rear housing so you can see them next time. the intermediate shaft marks are particularlly hard to line up, so i just get it right and make some marks on the gear and block at about 12 o'clock to make it easier next time.

Make sure you buy the right belt. The '93 240 is the only year that they used the rounded style teeth on the 240 series.

Thanks all.

Timing belt (and new water pump and new belt tensioner) are all installed and car ran perfect on first try.

Great! How long did it take you? I'm preparing to do the same job. Thanks!

Replacing a T-Belt really isn't a big deal and depending on your configuration, it shouldn't take more then 3 hours. I remove the belts, crank pulley, T-belt cover, and I'm in. I also have the IPD tool for stopping the crank from moving so I can remove the crank pulley.

I got the crank tool and my Bentley in hand - thanks for the info. I'm also doing the water pump while I'm at it and check the seals at the same time.
