It died before I could get to it. Throttle body cleaning is on the list as is a intake gasket.
It wasn't as well as I would have liked. I cleaned all the coil contacts where it attaches to the ignition module. They were heavily corroded. Seems like it was getting a weak spark
His picture showing the harmonic balancer suggests the crankshaft is around 15° After Top Dead Center (ATDC)
I would say it was a combination of things. Cam was probably off by a tooth still. The back of the timing cover was in pieces so lining it up was a best guess. Not sure how the tensioner bearing being locked down would effect cranking but I am sure it wasn't helping matters. Also added a few more gallons of fresh gas. I got what I could out of the tank while the pump was out but at least a gallon remained of the old fuel/water mix remained. I finally found my good battery charger and used it to get a little more juice in the 6 year old battery. I had been using a Harbor Freight trickle charger on it prior.
At least it was a tick for now, not a knock. I'm not sure how many miles are on this engine, but it looks like its been rode hard. No telling how old the oil is either. Fresh Delo and a Mann filter coming soon. Hopefully it will quieten it down some. The inlet hose is in a crate of parts that came with it. Have to get it back on as well as hook all the vacuum lines back up. Only vacuum line attached right now is the MAP sensor line.
Hmm. Interesting picture. I have always aligned the cam and aux shaft to the back timing cover but that pic suggests that mark may not hold true. That string method will come in handy for sure. In the last pic I posted of the timing belt the balancer is aligned with the lower timing cover mark, but the notch on the crank gear belt guide is aligned with the mark on the block. The white timing lines on a new belt will match the cam dot, the aux shaft dot, and the crank's dot ONLY IF the belt is wrapped farther around the crank sprocket. I guess it's some kind of compromise for those who insist on using the lines (or don't have any belt covers at all because KewlDood racecar), since the crank is the only one with the dotted tooth not covered by the belt.
