240 Coilovers: The Kyote Way

yea, I really, really want to run "racing" suspension springs on my car that cost about $15 brand new !!! :omg:
We put used springs on the lemons car, and even those cost $40. If I knew I could get NEW springs cheaper, I'd have done it. :-P

Just how low can you go with stock length struts (without bottoming the struts out)? Anybody have pictures?

What car? With my Bilsteins on my 940 with cut bumps I can hit the fenderwell with the liner out with an 18 inch wheel with a 215 or 225/ 40 up front.

Ill go find my picture

Here it is, and I still had about half in of strut left with just one of the 4 bumps left.

240 more specifically, sorry.

I'll be running coilovers when I go to Davis, but more than likely I'll just use some stock length struts for now. I can't find anyone in town that is willing to cut down my strut housings and weld them back together for a reasonable amount.

it would depend on the spring rates....general idea is that anything lower than ipd springs (1.75" or so drop) and you run the risk of bottoming out a stock length insert if you hit a big enough dip

The springs are 9x300.
I've run 2 240s low enough to only have 1" under the crossmember, but I didn't care much whether the struts bottomed out or not then.
I try to avoid dips as much as possible, but I'd rather not screw up my new camber plates and struts when i spin the coilovers down.

pretty much. I got away with stock length revalved HDs for a long time with 475lb springs. ~3x the rate of a "sport" spring will help keep off the bump stops.

Yep, stiff springs help that a lot. I don't bottom out with 1 turn cut off the iPd springs, but I could see it happening at that height. With the coil-overs I will be keeping the current ride height as I have a brutally steep entrance to my driveway and want to be able to continue to park the 244 at the house.

I have a set of 940 struts made into coilovers, 'What should I use for springs?' The kit came with 200lbs. springs. Going into a 780 Turbo. thanks and hope this isn't a thread jack?

It all depends on what the use of the car will be. 200's pretty soft, very soft when you consider many of us are running 400+ on the fronts of our autocross cars.

I ran 8x325 springs on the front with off the shelf HD's. Never had any bottoming out and it felt pretty well damped for street use. Never did any autocrossing though, just some railing through the canyons near my house.
