240 242 Needs front and rear windshields - glass shop advice?

Today our '82 242 lost its rear windshield with a bang. While
driving normally, apparently it made a sound like a gunshot and
broke into thousands of little cubes. The glass is still
together, but it is impossible to see through, and obviously
needs to be replaced.

This past winter, we picked up a rock on the Coquihalla highway
and got a big lateral crack in the front windshield also. I have
this sinking suspicion that the cracked front glass may have
contributed to the failure of the rear.

I need to have both replaced.

I understand the 1990+ 240 windshield fits into the older cars,
and is an improvement. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm also looking for a recommendation for a glass shop. I'd like
to take it to a good place, somewhere where they will inspect the
frame for rust and deal with anything they may find there.

Does anyone have a glass shop they could recommend in the lower
mainland of British Columbia?

I'd appreciate any advice, thanks.

Yes.

The back glass just ropes in.
I'd get one at the JY and rope it in.

Oh really?

I was pretty sure that I broke the rear glass from 244 I parted,
I certainly broke the windshield (Almost got it out, cracked it
at the very end when I got a little impatient).

I guess I should have a look in my crawlspace to see if I have
the rear glass after all. If not, I can always give the junkyard
a try. I love having an excuse to get out there.

Thanks for the reply Redwood,

The seal will probably be bent out of shape if it's stored resting on it.

I'm sure the rear glass is on a rubber seal like the 245 rear quarter window shown here;

I need a new front seal, and Broco in Langley was recommended to me by the manager of a body shop used by several guys I trust. 604-532-9600. I won't be able to make it out there for a couple of weeks though so can't give a first-hand review.

I've heard the same about the the 90+ windshield, but actually want to keep the older style so I can retain my big clunky chrome trim (to match all the other clunky chrome trim on the car).

Its a rubber seal on the rear. At he jy, sit on the back seat and gently kick the rear window out. I've done it a few times.

I'm almost certain I broke the rear window in the 244 I scrapped
while attempting to remove it. I really need to scour the
crawlspace to be sure.

If I have time, I'll try this at the junkyard, maybe with a
helper armed with the suction cup. Thanks for the tip.

That's funny, I stopped by Don Docksteader today (a local Volvo
dealer) and asked at the service desk who they use for
structural glass. They recommended Broco. The fellow said they
had tried a few, but the others were not up to standard.

The guy at the dealership did say it might be hard to source the
rear pane.

I know what you mean about the old style chrome trim, I love the
trim on my '79 245, and want to keep it. The 242 is a GLT model
however, and the trim is black, so I figure it's not as big of a
deal.

The 242 is my wife's car. She is using my 245 for now, which is
okay, as I have a work truck, but we are both signed up for "Dancing
with cones" with the local BMW club on the sixteenth, and if her
rear glass is not fixed, she won't be able to go. If Broco gets
back to me with a decent price, I'll give them the work,
otherwise it's off to the pick-a-part on Saturday.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Also for the picture Redwood,
I've got a rear quarter glass removal in my future to repair some
rust damage on my 245, I'll be rereading your thread before
tackling that.

I found a rear window at the Chilliwack pick-a-part. It was in the only 240 in the yard, a '83 242 GLT.

Broco in Langley is going to put it in, and replace the front glass.

I explained that he could use the 1991+ windshield, and the guy was intrigued, apparently the old set-up is a bit of a pain to install. He is going to order both, just in case.

I don't think they would have a problem replacing the old screens with the chrome trim.

Car should be ready Tuesday.

I'm planning the '91+ when I put a new screen in my GT down the track....I think with the blacked out trim on a GT the '91+ would look good.
The 164 is getting the old trim back on though, don't care how much of a pain it is to fit!

It's not so bad if you can get the 'L' clips and figure out how to seal them properly.

glass coverage with your insurance. ;)

i've replaced a few 240 windshields. it can be problematic finding the clips for the old style windshield that hold in the chrome trim - so the glass shops will try to glue it in instead, which never works well long term, you have to insist on getting the clips from the dealer to hold the chrome on - if that's even possible anymore

the 91+ windshields fit pre 80 cars and the shops do prefer to install them because they go in much easier with the glue, and the trim rings are obtainable and meant to be glued in. You have to make sure they order the trim rings appropriate for the windshield.

the rubber gaskets for the older style windshields eventually fail and start to peel away from the frame of the car leaving oppertunistic spaces for rust. wind resistance, noise and leaks are all a good reason to upgrade to 91+.

the last time I had to get a windshield on the 83 242 the insurance company didn't want to put in a 91+ windshield because it wasn't "original equipment" - till they saw how much more it was going to cost them to get everything for the 83 model and they had to special order the clips from volvo. it changed their mind pretty quick on letting me put in the upgraded windshield.

goodluck.

Well, we picked up the car this morning.

I can definitely recommend Broco in Langley, they did a great
job.

They were fully prepared to replace the windshield with the old
style. When I explained that Volvo recommends the 1991+ glass,
the guy said he would order both, and install the '91+ if it
fit up properly dry.

Well, it fit up, and cost $75 less.

Quite happy with the service, the car came back washed and
vacuumed also.

When I picked up the car this morning, the guy said "I've got to
ask, all the guys want to know, what is the button on top of the
shifter for?"

Thanks for the tip.

Glad to hear it worked out for you since I'm booked to go in on Friday. They liked your '91+ scheme so much they really wanted to do that with my car, but I want to keep to the clunky chrome. They did at least know all about the clips, so I'm hoping they get it right. Price will likely be about the same.

I was really hoping to take a big chunk of gravel in the windshield on that little rally I did last month, even more so when I got the quote. Oh well, insurance fraud just isn't worth the karma hit, and I don't want to risk a water leak with the monsoons scheduled to return shortly.
