86+ hood on pre-86 240 front end

looking through some pics earlier, I ran across a Euro 240 that looked to have the pre-86 hood, pre-86 grille, but the later style E-codes and fenders. I can't find anything in search but is there any reason, other than the cowl not matching up, that a 86+ hood couldn't go on a pre-86 front end, just changing the grille to an 86+ one and leaving everything else the same? the headlight lines look like they might line up.

'81-'85 European 240s could have what we consider 86-'93 fenders/headlights/turnsignals, but the -'85 grille/hood.

'86+ hood on -'85 should fit, since the hood is raised and the cowl drops. But the 86+ grille is not the right shape to fit between the headlights. The '86+ cowl drops down in the middle where the grille fits, but the -85 cowl doesn't. I think the grille will be too wide also. If you have one of each, measure and test fit before you do anything.

Here's one I found real quick that's on German ebay. I have no idea about the back half of it.... I think it's a hearse:-D. But look at the front end...

I would think then that if the old grille fits width-wise with the newer e-codes, then the reverse would also be true. I could use a newer hood and grille with my old style e-codes (TV screens). I think it'd look good but I'm not sure.

That's a pre 86 front end, but the headlamps are smaller then the TV screens, so they might look similar, but they are different.

Yea, that blue wagon has a pre-1986 hood. It has that raised hood that came with some 6-cylinder cars and i believe that even you guys over that side of the ocean had that hood with some turbo models. That hood has a similar back section as the flat hood.

And yep, as Towery said, in Europe we got the fender that are post 1986 in 1981 on all models.

But here is picture of a 1986+ hood with the back section of a pre 1986 car. It does not matter which fenders you have, the hood will still fit. This hood has a modified front section, but the rear section should be std. As you can see, it will fit, but there will be a gap.

thanks wagner, that's exactly what I wanted to know/see. I might do that.... the raised section in the middle is a lot less pronounced than the hood on that blue wagon (which is the one we got on all of ours from 80? to 85). it's the next best thing to a real flat hood IMHO. and they come a dime a dozen.

'86+ grille, hood, fenders, and turn signals. -85 headlights. It looks like the lower panel is '86+ as well. Obviously it's a European car, but I think the only change to this car is the USA headlights.

wheels

Those are Penta wheels, used to be a pretty common design back in the 80's, used by AMG, manufactured for various makes and models by Ronal and a few other companies. They look great on 240's!

i was running an 86 hood on my 79 242, with 79 headlights and grill. the newer hood center section stuck out about 1-2 inches, the one in wagners was chopped off. i was thinking about doing something similar, but it looked really aggressive in my opinion, really went well with the heads/fogs.

wagner was the center section lowered a little bit as well? i remember it seemed to be a little taller on mine.

I don't believe it was. I'm pretty sure the reason he used that hood was to clear the engine/intake/air cleaner. It used to have a cowl hood that was several inches taller than original.

That grille is different than the US version, with special mounting points.

I know erebuni also makes a kit that was aimed at the european market that adapted 81+ euro spec headlights to take the US style square beam headlights.
