90+ Locker Differential In Pre 90 1031

I was wondering if you could just install the differential into an older 1031 to get the locking of the rear wheels, or do you need the whole axle. I remember robin getting just a differential that he was going to swap in before he blew his 740 motor. Is it just a straight drop?

i believe that there is a cutoff with the gear ratios... 3.73??? i dont remember what it is, but anything below this will swap over to anything else below and vice versa on being above this ratio. i am not positive on this, though! anybody else? later,

I've always wondered if the electronic locker diff in most 940 turbos could be installed into earlier cars, and then tricked into locking whenever you want it to.

You mean eaton locker? Its not electronic. I had one in my car but you are gonna have a hell of a time getting the speedometer to work. I got tired of a non working speedometer and cruise control got several tickets in a few weeks time and said screw it and threw my old rear end back in. The difference in the rear ends is size and speed pick up. The ring in the rear end for speed pick up had 12 spots on it on non ABS cars and when ABS came along they put 96 spots on. It in theory should work if you get the ABS signal converter from a 88 or 89 car but mine never did after extensive work in my part and my dads. I even bought a new signal converter.

940's had an electronically locked differential.

Whats up with your old eaton? Wanna sell it?

I dont really give a shizzle about a speedo. Early 240's take the speedo signal from the tranny anyway.

IPD's garage sale is comming up in a month and a half or so. If you are interested you could save yourself shipping and pick it up. If you could pick it up he might be willing to let it go for 100 :e-shrug:

FWIW, I had an automatic locking diff in my 1041 rear end. If it's the same design as the auto locking diffs in earlier cars, it's not really a "performance" limited slip. It disengages above 25 MPH making it damn near useless on a car with any power for anything other than getting started in the snow.

There are a bunch of aftermarket Dana 30 diffs that will fit in a 1031. Why not use one of them?

I was thinking about trying to play with one and trick it into locking whenever I wanted.

Why not use another diff? Cuz I can get a 940 one tomorrow hella cheap.

You can get a brand new aftermarket LS diff for $225-ish. You're going to have to have it set up anyway regardless of what unit you swap in (unless you get whole axle). The Eaton units don't look very strong, although I have to say I'm not familiar with the electronic version. The auto locking units I've seen are pretty wimpy.

yeah, but OEM LSDs generally hella suck, unless they are helical or viscous. OEMs can't set up clutch pack diffs aggressive enough for us without making them harsh for a normal driver. I have two words for you all: TRUE TRAC

You want the entire rear axle if you want to install the Eaton locker. The Eaton locker is installed in Volvo 1041 rear axles. They are found in turbo 700/900s starting in the 1991 model year, and I think in 1994-95 NA cars. Too bad that we are a continent apart, I have a 1041 I'd like to sell.
