940 estate lowering options

Hi all,

I have a Volvo 940 estate 1996 with a b230fk and a m90

I want it to sit a bit lower but I drive it daily so I want something that is still comfortable if possible, I also want it lower to reduce some body roll as I find it quite scary for bendy uk roads,

After it I've got springs or whatever on it is it worth putting a a anti roll bar on either the back or front or both or whatever?

I have lowering springs on my 240. Comfort isn't too much different than stock.

A few notes that I've learned from suspension mods on these cars:

Quality dampers (as you'd call them) make a huge difference. I have Konis and I'd recommend them. People like Gaz too, I don't know if they have options for your car but I think they are UK based.

Sway bars just increase (and decrease?) the spring rate when the left and right side are unevenly loaded. Lowering springs will increase the spring rate at all corners usually, so it will have the same effect on body roll as sway bars. I say leave the stock sway bars at least for now.
 
I have 40/40 Lesjöfors springs with Bilstein B6 dampers and IPD sway bars in the front and rear, together with some Strongflex bushings and aluminum top mounts for the front suspension. The car sits on the road like a brick :lol:

The 40 mm ride height is okay, and I personally wouldn’t go much lower because of the low-hanging exhaust.

If you just want less body roll and a stiffer ride overall, upgrading the dampers and springs should be enough. My brother has KAW 65/40 springs with upgraded dampers, and that reduced the body roll by a lot while still keeping it comfortable enough for a daily driver, even with only the stock front sway bar. Before that, every turn felt like the car was about to do a barrel roll.

But I think any reasonably reputable brand of springs and dampers should do the trick.

If you want i can make some photos of the difference between my 40/40 and the 65/40 my brother has for comparison.
 
Yeah that would be great thanks bud I'm not into crazy low cars just sitting a little bit lower would be perfect
 
-40mm springs from Kilen on my 940 for over 4 years and 50K miles. Paired with Bilstein B6 shocks and the IPD front ARB. Rides well, speed bumps not an issue. Doesn't even look lowered unless you are a 940 nerd. the BNE Quick Steer Roll Correctors are well worth the investment, glad I have them fitted.

The white one has the 40/40 Lesjöfors springs, and the gray one has the 65/40 setup. From what I measured, they are at a similar ride height because neither car has really moved since the springs were installed. I would say both cars will probably settle another 1–3 cm over time, with the gray one likely dropping a bit more because of the 65 mm front springs.

The wheels on the white car are 225/45R17 on 8Jx17 rims, so they are pretty much the same diameter as the stock 195/65R15 the grey still sits on.

Will have to see how they settle because the white one with the grey car with the 65/40 doesn't look anywhere near 40mm yet, looks almost identical to my one with the factory springs,
 
If I remember right, both cars were 2–3 cm lower directly after we installed the springs and dampers. Maybe your stock springs are already pretty worn out, but from what I read, the Lesjöfors should come down a true 40 mm. I don’t know about the KAW ones on the grey one tho. The Photo is with stock springs.

Don't lower your car. It screws up everything. Especially when you start hitting things with the bottom of the car. Instead, increase the spring rate and get better dampers.
Exactly. Lowering destroys the front roll center, causing worse handling than originally designed. Roy is "spot on" as they say in the UK.

I once lowered my old 9 series sedan.... looked sexy, handled like crap! Finally saw (and understood) the error of my ways.... and "raised the lowered" as RWC always said. JOY was had.
