All you need to know about the M90

I can't help you with US suppliers, but in the UK we've switched to the kit from either SKANDIX or putting together a kit from the speedingparts catalogue. Sachs no longer make the 850R clutch disc or pressure plate. IIRC, the 850GLT stuff is not the same level of clamping force/size

Hey so I rebuilt my m90 and reassembled it to test everything it went through gears fine the first time but it became harder to turn the input shaft in 2nd -5th. Any advice?

Can you measure the torque needed for the output shaft to turn ? This is how to decide if something is wrong with the bearings preload.

Can someone confirm to me that part number for OEM oil is 31280771?
Or brief me quickly about what oil I can use?

Thanks!!

It's a bit of a contentious subject. That is the currently valid PN, as far as I know...but some feel that the spec is now a long way away from the original (mainly that it's too thin), and that a generic 75w80 GL4 gear oil is a better option. I'd do some reading and satisfy yourself with what you think is the right answer.

cheers

James

Would gl5 be ok? That’s all I could find

No ! Stay away from GL-5 it will destroy the brass parts of the M90 !

Copying from my build thread (too lazy to edit..):

As for the oil that was used for refilling the gearbox, the 1161745 SAE 75W-80 that was highly recommended in the "All you need to know about M90" article is no more available by Volvo. This oil was indeed very good as the article mentions. However there are two direct replacements for this transmission oil: Redline MTL 75W-80 GL-4 and RAVENOL MTF-2 SAE 75W-80. The first one was used since it was available in the local market.

What about 31280771 oil? It seems to be still available, and it's 75W GL-4 as the original.

IPD sells it : https://www.ipdusa.com/products/676...70-V70-S60-S40-V50-C30-Genuine-Volvo-31280771

I can find it in europe too. I wonder if volvo sells it?

There were 2 originals as the first post mentions:

1161 645:

Quality: API GL-4 / Volvo standard 1273,08 transmission oil 97308

Viscosity: SAE 75W

Density @ 15?C/59?F: 885kg/m?

Oil base: Multigrade, synthetic base

Pourpoint: -48?C/-54?F

Flashpoint: 212?C/414?F

Kinematic viscosity @ 40?C/104?F: 67.8mm?/s

Kinematic viscosity @ 100?C/212?F: 10.5mm?/s

1161 745:

Quality: API GL-4 / Volvo transmission oil MTF 97309 / WSS-M2C200-C3

Viscosity: SAE 75W-80

Density @ 15?C / 59?F: 841kg/m?

Oil base: Fully synthetic

Pourpoint: -60?C / -76?F

Flashpoint: 230?C / 446?F

Kinematic viscosity @ 40?C/104?F: 59.8mm?/s

Kinematic viscosity @ 100?C/212?F: 10.1mm?/s

The second one was highly recommended and i have tested it with great success, however it is discontinued. The one you are referring to replaces the 1161645 (first one). You would probably be fine with it, but if i had to choose i would use (as i did) a -745 fully synthetic replacement not a -645.

I assume that yes. But note the comment on the first post "The M90 takes 1.85 liters of oil. The only oil that should be used is the special oil from Volvo. Trust me on this one." and "The oil to use is the one on the right, with part number 1161745."

However since the -745 is not available i chose to find the closest to it.

Redline MTL 75W-80 GL-4 and RAVENOL MTF-2 SAE 75W-80 mention 1161745 compatibility on their sticker/specs this is why i chose one of them.

Well glad you responded quickly. I’ll be returning the fluid and going to get the right stuff today.

So sorry to make a double post but Volvo has updated part numbers for the transmission fluid for the 745 I’ll update when I have bottles in hand. It does say gl5
