240 Anyone try the VP Autoparts 240 steering rack?

Well unless we are buying the new racks as listed by CVI and VP. Then we are also going to have to supply the pallet of cores to a place here in the US. That's fine as long as people realize not every rack is going to be rebuildable and they may not be able to get new parts like a new pinion or rack.

I guess you haven't noticed that rebuilt and new steering racks come with the tie rods installed. It isn't a do it yourself kit. So, try running the actual dimensions and weight and see what you come up with. It isn't $40. I ship racks ready to install, as does every major supplier of rebuilt/new steering racks. The current quote to the same residence is $90. The shipping rate has gone up since I shipped the rack to Mike.
 
It?s only half again more to ship worldwide these days if you want something shipped to your door and don?t wanna have to do the legwork to chase it down or want assurances or retail or person to person wholesale hand holding, don?t waste your time sticking your neck out for a bunch of entitled ingrate dirtbag TB crooks & losers?

USD is real strong but I?d uhh?have reservations about any ?entirely new rack? (including gears?) for that price or that there?s any margins or wiggle room in the price for a ?bulk? :-)lol: @ that in the real world for 20 dirtbag PITA TBers) :lol:

QFT, but the avg. TBer also often really sucks at proper packing & shipping and I?ve sent quite a few some distance?
Sold I dunno?basically all 30 ?workable? ZF type 3 OEM unmolested ZF cores I had.

That said, you?re totally right snd even sans tie rod ends and cleaning up the mess it makes to get it as dry as possible w/capped/looped lines & the chore that is; it?s still a chunk and shipping rates even with wholesale accounts as you know for to-end-mile customers door step are way up lately & hard to predict with the upcoming rail workers strike & driver shortage with the driverless car/truck AI scam that?s been ?just a few years away? for a decade+(Might well come and be as statically safe as a human driver tmw? Idk/above my pay grade but seems a ways off?) for UPS & FedEx as well as high fuel costs & worldwide diesel shortage.

Almost be more worthwhile to make the test bench & pictorial tutorial to show disassembling, evaluating snd testing & resealing & bench testing an OEM later ZF I?d think?
But what do I know?

No dog in the fight & please don?t shoot me I?m just the messenger, but Ive done my time dealing with TB fever dreams or group buys & what they really entail? no thanks, but prove me wrong/try one out and let us know how it goes?

This is one of those things I?d love to be wrong about, but tempered with a long memory, experience & history, too?

I?d rather something succeed than fail and better to under promise/over deliver &/or have low expectations & be pleasantly surprised than the reverse or get skunked &/or go backwards, right?

The 240 type 3 ZF rack and pinion gears only fit like 1 other vehicle that we never got in the USDM and power steering was pretty rare in Europe before ~1990 that are even longer since in the crusher if memory serves me well?

Someone could talk to say FCP/IPD and have them fetch the mother load, then deliver to those who have put down a deposit/etc. With a PayPal transactions, buyers could be charged...when shipped, iirc.

I don't know if FCP could have a cheaper price since they are on the east coast.

Excellent, let us know. It's one thing trying to get a rack that doesn't leak, it's another thing entirely to get one that doesn't feel like it already did 200k.

And I think my Maval rack that feels like it already did 200k might be starting to leak just a touch.
 
Will probably snag one of these from CVI or VP, wherever is cheaper. Mine was starting to leak and then after the collision and resulting rainbow tie rod probably best to not trust it.

Only hesitation, why does VP list it as 79-84? Why wouldn't it fit my 92 with a CAM rack?

This is true provided you have the correct mounting hardware for the type of rack you're using. There are 6 different racks and 4 different mounting kits. You can download a document from Maval that shows which rack gets what hardware.

I don't know how much Maval charges for their kits but they're $25 and free shipping from this place on eBay. They even have a kit for the early CAM rack with the small input shaft.

On a group buy:
I enjoy a decent shipping discount on FedEx 2-day at work. (Ground is NOT cheaper with their FedEx contract :lol:)
Quick price check with generous measurements came back at $30-40 per rack depending on location in the US.

There's also an absolute abundance of packaging material if they need to be (double)boxed.
Work location can also accept pallets/semi-freight. Would not be the first time pallets with my name came in.

Also, I'm in for a group-buy either regardless.
 
I ordered a rack from CVI and it arrived today. Packing was sub-par (a tie rod end was through the box when I got it), but I think everything survived.

This rack definitely looks and feels completely new. There are some differences I'm seeing from the stock 240 racks, especially in the cast housing that suggests it is new. The splines are brand new, and there's some heat tint along the shaft where it was case hardened. There is no play at all, it feels incredibly tight. I'm hopeful this really is entirely new based on my brief inspection tonight.

I plan to take photos side by side with my existing rack and doing a more in depth write up when I swap, but from my initial look, it does look completely new to me.

Glad someone made the leap of faith and tried out one of their new racks. I hope it goes well. Everything I've bought from CVI has been good quality. Every steering rack I've bought and had delivered had a tie rod popping out of the package. 🐶
 
Well I decided to send it on the CVI Rack also and just placed an order for one. I will post updates on order here as I get them.

I used the link from the first page https://www.cvi-automotive.se/en/articles/2.23759.41679/steering-rack-240260-with-power-steering-lhd.

From there I clicked on the buy button and added it to the cart. Then the purchase was just like any other web site and enter address and payment method. The Rack showed up in about 2 weeks and the box was in very good condition and the part looked good too. I have not had a chance to install yet though.
