240 Anyone try the VP Autoparts 240 steering rack?

I have now installed two new racks. My CVI rack (I think this is the one that VP resells) is still going strong, no leaks, no play, about 5K miles.

I also bought and installed the IPD new rack on a friend's Volvo. The IPD rack looks very similar to the CVI/VP variant, but there were some differences. It bolted on fine, no clearance issues, no leaks, aligned fine. Not a lot of miles, but felt similar to the CVI rack and looked brand new as well.

IPD: $492 + $79 (should be free shipping, any orders over $150 - even better)
CVI: $564 + $159 (increased by $90)
CVR: $666 +$56
VP Auto: $666 + $76

I found this very helpful -- thanks for listing them together, @cbevis. I updated the list with today's prices. I've started a steering rack savings jar.

Edit 5/10/24 - IPD's price jumped about $20. And CVI went wholesale only - looks like that option is out.

Hey all, one thing I am not clear on is what I will have to do to convert my zf rack to a new CAM repro. I think I need a mounting kit but which one? Also steering shaft needs to be changed I assume? I don't want to get rid of the zf but if you pour in fluid it literally comes right out of the seals and I don't know of anyone who will rebuild them.

Let me know if you want to sell that ZF core.
I’m collecting racks to send to Sellholm for quick rack rebuilds

Well ideally I'd like to keep it and get it rebuilt. But I imagine the turnaround time to sellholm and back is pretty slow...is that the only one that will rebuild them?

Other places will rebuild them, Sellholm puts in a new rack and pinion and makes the steering 2 or 2.5(?) turns lock to lock. It’s not cheap, but it is proper.

Are there any options for older 240s? Looks like the racks mentioned in this thread fit '79-93 but my '78 242 needs a new rack and I don't have the know-how/tools to rebuild it. I hardly even know what kind it is, I think a CAM. Does anyone know the difference between pre and post-79 racks? Also, what decided what rack would be put in each car, was it year, place of manufacture, trim type??

The early racks have a smaller input shaft/spline. I think you can use a later rack if you get the shaft with u-joints between the column and rack from a later car.

The type of rack used has to do with supply AFAIK. I don't think either manufacturer was able to produce enough racks so Volvo used whatever was available at the time.

Yes, that is all you need to do. Replace the shaft and u-joint that runs from the u-joint at the end of the column down to the steering rack. And, of course, have the rack mounting kit for the type of rack being installed.

I installed a VP steering rack in my 240 yesterday. So far so good, trying to find a place to get a proper alignment done.

I did have to notch the crossmember in one spot so a line off the rack would clear.

Came across this today. Doens't appear its been discussed. Rockauto now lists a new 240 rack for $359. Shipping to my place showed up as $25. Manufactured by AAE and has a 2 year warranty.

Rockauto Rack
That's the same one being sold by iPD, AAE is a brand owned by CRP Automotive. I've had one from iPD in my car for a little less than a year now and it's been great. Went into the car without having to clearance anything. If your car has a ZF rack you'll need a mounting kit for a CAM rack.

Do you have a link for these mounting kits? I will need one, and will likely go with the one mentioned in RockAuto.

I bought the new CAM rack. I got it from Voluparts in Atlanta. Item looked new and has steel lines on the rack. (As opposed to some plastic lines on my ZF rack.) Voluparts included the CAM mounting block and U-bolt. Installation was relatively easy as it was the third time I've changed the rack. After an alignment it's very nice. Feels like new. No leaks so far in 500+ miles.

I think the plastic line on the zf rack is the air pressure equalization line.
This is from memory, from when i was trying to resurrect old racks.

My ZF rack had a catastrophic leak. After replacing it with the cam rack I found a plastic line that had fallen off the barb connection. That would appear to the the source of the leak. I did have the rack rebuilt previously, so perhaps the plastic line was a part from the rebuild.
