B230ft into 740gle

So I have the suspension pretty much squared away on my 1986 740gle. (IPD sways, Chassis bracing, and cut springs.)

Now I want to start in on the power deptartment because anyone who has driven a 740gle knows its pretty lacking. I bought a B230ft out of a 92 740. It only has 98k on it so I'm thinking maybe replace some seals while its out of the car. Is it going to be more straight forward to use lh2.2 or lh2.4. I'm not entirely clear on what to do even after reading all the archived threads about it. If I switch out ecu's MAM's and use the lh2.4 distributer am I going to be able to use the new engine's wiring harness with all of my old accessories... alt, ignition, etc?

Also I have the ZF transmission, that hasn't really done anything wrong to me yet, but at the same time its getting a little rickity at 220xxx miles. I'm swaping to a AW unit. What pieces should I be sure to snag off the parts car to make that swap easy.

Colin, your current ride is LH2.2... so forgot about 2.4 altogether. You do NOT want any of the 2.4 stuff from the donor car.

Are you going to add a turbo to the new engine or are you going to run it NA?

If yes to the turbo, you should also buy ALL of the turbo related stuff from teh donor car... turbo, manifold, oil and water lines, intercooler, intecooler/radiator brackets, bolts, intake hoses, etc...downpipe, bolts, studs, clamps... everything you DON"t have on your car.

yes, of course, replacing the oil seals on the new motor before it goes into your car is a very good idea.

and yes, the ZF tranny is a weak sister... an aw71 swap is a good thing... if the donor car has one, get it... I'm not sure whether the ZF and aw71 share the same driveshafts, so you'll need that too....

ah just put a manual tranny in it

I would use a computer and wiring harness out of a 86 740 tubo car becasue it would just plug right into your cars harness, I did this swap on an 89 740na to 89 740ti and it worked, get all the wiring from the plugs from inside the passanger comp. to the headlights. it will work.

I would seriously not recommend doing this unless one is truly masochistic.... do you realize how much wiring that is? on turbo cars, the wiring doesn't terminate in the engine compartment at the 8-prong connectors like NA cars... it goes clear back to the fuse box... madness.

if the guy is doing a turbo swap, the +T route is vastly simpler... a few extra wires here and there and then it's done.... no need to rewire the headlights... ;-)

I would ONLY recommend a full rewire if the person were completely stripping the car for a repaint...

I am adding a turbo. How should i wire it then? I'd rather avoid a full rewire unless it was compeletly neccecary.

you will need to first get the wiring diagram for your year car.... www.volvotechinfo.com

I strongly recommend the volvo green manual over haynes or chilton because of the drastically higher quality.... furthermore, this will be your wiring guide.

Then, you need to do some searching on the performance side of the board...

here are two recent posts where I go into great detail on parts of the wiring...

http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=48369

and

http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=47750

there are many more.

In short... very short, you need to add in a ballast resistor for the lower impedance b230ft greentop fuel injectors.

And, you need to reroute the AMM wires to the passenger side of the car...

you my friend, have some reading to do.

I just got back from pulling the engine. I think i will end up going with a computer and wiring from an 88 lh2.2 car. i'll have to rewire from the ecu out the firewall and then too the headlights but I think thats the only way to do it. What do I do about the wiring that runs through the firewall on the opposite side of the ecu towards the fuse box. will that stuff just plug into my turbo harness? I think I could pull off the mechanical portion of the swap but this electrical is gonna kill me.
