Hi!
I am just a new member and has acquired a 1987 240 gl automatic sedan with a solex cisac carburetor on a B230K engine. I would like to seek advise regarding the better/economical engine modification upgrades:
1. will a 16 valve cylinder valve do the trick? will it fit? what donor engine will I have to take it from? should this be feasible, should it also come with the fuel injection system? Harness, sensors, headers, etc?
2. if i go the carb for no, 1, what do I need to do?
3. throw in a turbo/exhaust manifold from a donor 240 glt engine, can I still use the existing carb?
4. any other suggestions would be greatly appreciatede

1. there is a 16v faq, easily found with the search tool:) yes it will fit, but not a direct bolt on due to some stuff you'll find out in the faq. you can get one off a b234, talk to frpe82 about some 16v chips if this is something you are really interested in doing...without going aftermarket management.
2. no clue about that, srry. I dont know carbs.
3. no clue, but if you go with a 16v head you're either gonna need custom headers, or the exhaust mani from the b234 (which wont allow turbo bolt-on goodness)
4. Stage Zero. something I never bothered to do, and many cars are better off than mine for having done it.

the 16V head with not work with your engine block.

B230K has the combustion chambers in pistons not the head (631 head is flat with no chambers) so you go putting a 16V head on that and you'll have about 4:1 compression.

the only carb setup that will work with the 16V head setup without making a new manifold is the Penta AQ171 manifold with twin solex downdraughts. this is due to the 16V having very different ports to the 8V head.

Exhaust mani from a 240 turbo won't work for the same reason as above.

gotta change pistons for valve relifes, i thought the 631 was an urban myth

16v will work w/rest of block, just need

manis, pistons, and a cam belt tensioner, weird little alfa(or whatever) dizzy cap that will not come off w/the head on, that might be it

oh, and msns, just cause

dose the 631 have the pimp intake port?

nope it's real, standard pistons have central round chamber with valve reliefs for the standard 8V valves.

dose the 631 have the pimp intake port?

no it has a really weird one that curves to the right before swirling down into the valve area.

some pic's from morleys old post http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=28435

B230K engine mods

I agree to all the inputs I received regarding my concern. Notably, I want my B230K engine with a solex-cisac carburetor modified using existing volvo parts and non of the aftermarket/performance parts. Exhaust manifold is also not a problem, I can have one custom-made using a mandrel bending machine here in the Philippines, budget is also a little tight.

where abouts in the philippines are you. when i was over there for 6 weeks i only saw 4 volvo's and they were newer models.

keep an eye out around marine yards and such for volvo/penta engined boats being broken up. some of them may have things like penta AQ151 it's a 2.5L 8V with twin carbs that you could swap in place of your B230K.
has a normal head and piston setup and you'd be able to remove the marine parts off it and swap the car parts over from your existing engine so should fit straight in.

thanks ravennus for the tip regarding the AQ151 engine! I'm based here in Manila. That's the beauty of having a brick, there are only quite a few owners of Volvos here and most of it are newer models.

Was your trip here for business or pleasure?

bump from the dead but still interesting to know, (cam here via google while looking for B230K mods)
No real answers here i dont need no 16V head just a bit more kick from my B230K (with 530 head so no 631 for me)

Ah if you already have a 530 and the correct pistons then tuning as per normal. What cam do you have and what sort of power level are you wanting?

What is the engine in?

Engine labels says B230K, it has solex carb and the 530 head. Cam i have no idea.
It should have 115HP i think, its a bit tired too been from a girl who mainly just put parking dents in the panels and not drive to fast i think so might need a little waking up.

I want to DD the car and put it on LPG, a bit more kick would be nice. it should be more reliable then fast thats the goal

Good start would be decent exhaust, K cam or better and some good carbs on there. Ignition wise things will need adjusting. Is it running Renix?

Got a new exhaust on there, how much inch is recommended.
Normal coil ignition. Don't have a k cam spare, what's in there normally.
Carb I hear webber coming up allot

For a 2.3 min would 2 1/4 but 2 1/4 would be better.

Not sure what cam would be in your engine but at best it would be a A cam. Of the factory cams D, V, K or best would be H

You can use a webber 36/36 for mild upgrade or for the works twin Webber/ Delloto or Solex 45's but 40's would be ok if you picked them up cheap.

Need to sort out getting these bits to you for the 360 BTW

What are you talking about here
"For a 2.3 min would 2 1/4 but 2 1/4 would be better."

I still have a few A cams from the 360's so that might be a idea. 36/36 webber was the one is was looking at i already got a mani for that. just not a LPG piece but thats gonna be a issue with swapping carbs anyway.

Yah those 360 bit would be great, taking it to MOT after/during work tomorrow had to weld a few spots after that getting ready for 2013 season :)
