So lately I've noticed my 960 has an interesting set of issues. The guy that started this thread: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=54058 describes the issues I'm having perfectly. I've gone through and done all the possible little tricks (marvel mystery oil, 4000rpms, thicker oil, etc. etc.) to try and remedy this issue but have not been able to figure it out. To be perfectly honest, it seems like rod knock at first. You start the car and theres an audible tap tap tap tap.... and even with the mechanics stethoscope it seems to be coming from the lower end (cylinder 1). Whats interesting though is that once at operating temperature, it almost dissapears. The motor revvs smoothly and there is only a faint sound that appears at idle. I do get a little smoke upon takeoff sometimes like that other poster, but it seems to be an unrelated issue (motor has 160k). I really want to say its lifter noise, but I've not had the stethoscope lie very often. I took the car on a trip to boca raton the other day (400 miles) and there was no issues at all. It drove like a dream and got good gas milage.
Anyone with a 960/*90 having any similar issues? I could look for a lower mileage long block, but I really don't want to bother with that kind of stuff right now. I'm just too busy between work and school.
