Converting Gauge cluster from mechanical to electric

Edit: I got it all to work. It seems I had to connect one more wire to ground on the speedo connector, and Andysbeta helped me determine that. I then took out the bulbs for the OD cell and removed the bulb for the bulb out warning since I had no bulbs out and none were even on, plus I find it to be a useless feature. The OD light is not needed since I have a Getrag now.

So, to recap, this is almost plug and play. If you do this, connect the SPeedo wires as such. Use the BLue/red wire,(A) on connector 32 (the smaller curved one with 5 wires in it) and attach it to the Blue wire of the Speedo connector (small white connector with 3 wires A.K.A. connector 233 location #3) Connect the black wire on the speedo connector #1 to the black wire on connector 32 location #4. Be sure that you still have ground at both 32/4 and 233/1. Then run the wires to the axle (a green and white wire and a black) Obviously connect the black to the black of the speedo connector and green/white to the green white. If would be a good idea to pull the wiring harness for the axle at a junk yard, and run them in the car.

Pretty simple

I also added some face updates and swapped the cell windows for all the warning lights from the 83 cluster into the 93 cluster. Check post #9 in this thread to see some pics of the cluster in action.

Thanks

I swapped my 245Ti to a getrag 265 and the getrag does not have the output for a mechanical speedo, at least, mine does not. I recently swapped in a 1993 1031 rear axle which has the tone ring for the electric speedo. I also took the gauge cluster from the 1993 240 donor car and have been trying to get swapped over to electronic speedometer. I have print outs from the volvo green manuals with the wiring of the two gauge clusters. It looked after some matching of plug wires and what they do to be a direct swap with maybe a few more wires to add or one or two wires to change. So far, no success. Nothing works on the 93 gauge in my 1983 car. The only things that work are the guage lighting, and the highbeam indicator. Left and right turn signal too. Everything else is dead. I used the tach gauge from my 83 to keep the tachometer, and that barely works. It shows 100rpm at idle, and when the car is reved never gets to 1500 rpm.

So, I need help in this conversion. My thoughts are the 93 circuit board is different and the internal routing is keeping things from getting the right signal or power. The only wire I can find that needed to be rerouted was 32/A which is switched power on the 83 and is not present or hooked up on the 93. And the reroute was to give switched power to 233/3 on the 93 cluster.

If anyone else has done this, I could use a little help in determining the best path. Not even sure I can run the 93 cluster without some major mods to the car or cluster. Lets see if this can be done or at least a link to how it is done.

EDIT: Below is the wiring Diagrams from a 93 240 and a 84 240. I took down the hot-linking to make this post a little easier to read.

Sounds like you need to stuff the 83 cluster back in and wire up the later speedo directly.

the 83 is back in, but no speedo for now. The electric speedo guage by itself does not fit the 83 cluster. I thought about that. Might work if I completely hack the rear of the cluster and solder in certain points.

Ok, give it up. What fixed it?

Check the Edit I made at the top. It was the ground wire most likely on the speedo cluster. Either that, or a poor connection. I had a feeling it was something simple, but being 10 years different, volvo could have been sneaky and changed everything around.

And thanks Dave for the gauge stickers, thems be sexy I think.
