Corivus' 1991 740SE v8 swap

Hey there, Just a video update(headphones for the low rumble noises) of where I'm at:

So, the throttle body issue ended up being multiple things, first off, the throttle plate was not moving physically. I fully disassembled it, mostly because 800 for a new electronic throttle body wasn't ideal, and then soaked all the non-electronic parts in transmission fluid for 2 days. After that a little articulating back and forth and it was moving like a brand-new throttle body again. I reassembled the whole thing and reinstalled it and I had throttle control back... for 1 minute. Pulled the codes again and got 1517 and 1518 this time... so I started checking wiring/grounds/etc. and finally decided to change out the TAC module with my other spare that has been inside the car this whole time.

I have been parking outside without the hood for a while and we got a LOT of rain which while not uncommon during the winter was a little unusual. Because of the work I’ve been doing the hood hasn’t been on the car. So, I haven't had time to start modifying the hood with how busy the shop has been but I am hoping I can start this Monday. I will be starting off with my worst hood out of the 3 I have to hopefully refine the process with one of the nicer white ones. That hood is the one in the video, it has lots of dents and paint rippling so I think it’s a perfect candidate. That said in between all the troubleshooting I had lost my fuel pump; I traced this back to a bad relay that became water logged. Swapped it out and yay I'm driving again, apparently burnouts are really easy to do so tires will be a thing once I get further along.

I think for now that’s really it for updates, I’ll be pulling the engine and transmission at some point to install the new oil pan and do a lot of other things but I feel like that will take some time. Also thelostartof is maybe going to take a day off and come weld up the exhaust so we can see what I need to change for cables and hoses, thankfully everything is ridiculously long so most everything can be moved around.

Coming along!

So the ETM & fuel relay damage were due to the rain exposure over time? You have the relay box up in behind the headlamp?
it was under the fuel filter and pcm, but i'm relocating it to the S70 main relay fuse box so its in a sealed enclosure. the ETM however was due to being old the throttle plate was physically bound up but the whole unit is sealed.

short updates, finally started the cutting of the spare hood, measured a bunch of time and ended up here and only had to make one trim. pretty happy with the results and kinda excited that I did not need to make a bigger hole then this. thinking of trying one of those bulges instead of a scoop just need to take measurements to figure out what's going to work best.

edit: forgot to also add I made a plug with the old vacuum purge module cut it down and then put a set screw through the middle after tapping it and then sealed the threads with jb weld. at some point I'll smooth it out and paint it black so it doesn't stick out.

Hey there, small update so my turn signals keep falling out whenever I start the 740 up the tabs weren't broken when this happened originally but the last time I started up 2 tabs got broken on my turn signals. in order to prevent the loss of my ecodes to some snowbird running them over if they fell out while driving I did a little fix. I got inspiration from the 850s that had the spring retainer to keep the turn signals in place.

Also here's a picture of the modified purge valve that I used to plug the vac port. last shot is the engine bay. lastly I've been tracking down a leak that's started recently while I've been able to run the car for longer periods of time and have discovered its my water pump. so next week i'll be changing out my water pump which hopefully will be relatively easy. if not I am at the shop so i'll get it done either way.

Good move on the spring retainers - the aftermarket marker lamps definitely have weaker tabs than Original - I need to add something like that to mine, already had the D/S slide forward off the tabs..

So small update there was a leak, I traced it back to my water pump so first step was to drain the distilled water that was in there, and boy was it gross, oddly enough i think all of this was from the engine and water pump since those are the only components that aren't new. I gotta say that was the easiest water pump I've done in a while. All in all I think it took me about 30 minutes.

Today I spent the day running some radiator cleaner and degreaser through the system and next week (we are down 2 mechanics so yay I'm not a service writer this week) I'll be doing a flush with distilled water and then flush it again and fill it with the proper 50/50 mix of coolant and water. At some point I also need to make a proper mount for the PCM right now its just kinda sitting conveniently on top of the air filter.

Performed the flush on friday and boy did I dislodge a lot of stuff from the engine (heater core, tstat, wp, rad and all cooling lines are brand new) took about 2 hours to fully flush the system of as much gunk as possible but in the end water flowed through crystal clear. Idle temps when driving are 197* and when sitting in traffic they hit 201 after the flush. And here's a video and picture of the process:

Test drove the 740 today and saw a 240 so I had to say hello. Traffic stopped suddenly so no extra video, since I doubt anyone wants to hear me giggling manically.

So, my 00 V70 NA DD died last week and this car got shifted to DD status, there was a small run in with the trans deciding to no longer shift but after pulling the pan on the trans and doing a full flush 2x its been going strong for 2 days and about 200 miles. That said I need to address the a/c, oil pan and skid plate sooner then later for peace of mind. Maybe also exhaust and tires... this thing is loud and loses traction pretty easily.

Gonna try and get photos of the tear down and the street sweeper setup i made quick and dirty 30 minutes before I had to drive 90 miles round trip once I'm back in arizona again.

thanks man, finally back from vacation so I'm gonna poke at some more stuff when time pops up at work. would of preferred to had this sitting on the side lines for another month or 3 before putting it into full DD status but needs arise.
You got further than I ever did so Props

thanks, though it looks like I get to play tear down the transmission this Monday. Its decided that 50mph is all it wants to do, I'm thinking the clutches finally burnt out on the trans. Will try to snap photos during the process and maybe might even clearance a bit more space for the trans cooler lines.

Just a tiny update, with the help of another volvo enthusiast and amazing friend I'll be stuffing a 4L65e in the 740. Going to redo the cooler lines, contemplating having them route into the cabin and out where the old ecu plug was to get around some of the tight spaces.

Got the 4l65E in over the weekend, did a full flush on it as well as a new transmission filter, ran -6 a/n line from the trans to the cooler with fittings and it has been shifting perfectly. Also routed the transmission lines so that they don't sag anymore.

Installed the new low profile oil pan on the engine as well and clearance is great.

Also got new tires for the rear went with 225's instead of 215's and its been ok grip wise but I still lose traction if I try to floor it at any point.
