crazy Holset frankenturbo idea

First of all, I have no idea if this would work, but I was thinking...

I read on Stavtech that the Holset HE221w is basically an improved an improved TD04 turbo with similar specs to a TD04-19t but with better spooling. It will fit into Volvo turbo turbine housings, too. I was thinking about putting this into an angled Volvo 850 turbine housing and adding a 3" exhaust. Anyone tried this?

But I had another idea. If the HE221 is a TD04, could I also use the Volvo TD04 CHRA and put the Holset tubine and compressor on it? The goal would be to keep the turbo water cooled.

Any input welcome.

This is what we call an "all-makes" turbo in the industry. Manufacturer A reverse engineers a turbo made by Mfg. B to fit a specific application, and then Mfg. A introduces their own drop-in replacement. That new turbo may be outline interchangeable with the original and bolt right into that OE application, but the internals could be totally different.

There is no guarantee that Holset used the same compressor & turbine shroud contours and trims as MHI did, therefore no guarantee that the housings can swap between the two. I did find this forum thread though - looks like the turbine side at least is interchangeable:

To get more detailed info I'd suggest calling up a turbo distributor specialist shop and ask pointed questions, or have examples of both turbos on hand to do measurements and test fits like @redblockpowered suggests.

There are literally hundreds of variables that affect turbo performance that are internal and not immediately obvious without measurement. The housings might interchange, but what if the Holset's "magic" is in the wheels? In that case the Holset housings on the OE MHI CHRA might not amount to much, performance wise.

TL;DR - there's no guarantee that what you're thinking about will work, and even if it does, no clear indication that this will give you any measurable gains.
