Damnit, I think I killed the MS.

I've been trying to get my OEM coolant temp sensor to work properly w/ MS. I tried easytherm once before, and it didn't seem to do anything useful. So I was trying to transfer the .s19 again and I forgot to unplug my coil pack. Went to MT to see if anything was different. It wasnt, but I figured I'd crank the motor up anyway. No spark. Hmm... thats odd, the car was running a few minutes ago. I tried a couple different msq's and got nothing. So I figured I'd reload the MS-e code. I go to do that, and thats when I realize that I forgot to unplug the coil the first time. This time, I unplug it, and continue. I get a Boot> error. Now, none of the LEDs come on, and the MS doesn't do anything. Powering off and on does nothing. What could I have fried?

This is the old v2.2 board from Kenny w/ 029y code on it. I'm using DSM coilpacks as per the MikeH article. Ideas? Suggestions?

you mighta killed the coils... put the standard code back on via the boot loader (i.e. jump the boot pins on the board)

even with the boot jumper jumped? i'd further a guess that the software didn't transfer over correctly, not that the coil burned something up, but i've occasionally been wrong.

Yeah, w/ the boot jumper jumped. I was thinking that too. Ideas for a solution?

pull the board out and look for burned traces, and then buy another ms1 chip? (they're only like $18 from glensgarage.com) What are you using to trigger the wasted spark?

i say get out your multimeter and start checking things, get a magnifying glass and look for burned traces on the board, it is probably something dumb like that... check caps and transistors visually for melting and/or solid discharge...

of course check all the simple things like power going to MS and signals, what do you have and what don't you have.

try bootloading it without the jumper, that worked once for me when it shouldn't have, but either way it fixed the problem.

let us know what you find! :-P

actually i've had problems with chips not wanting to work or flash, try power cycling it a couple of times with the jumper in place

I'm using the DSM module to take care of the coil triggering. Nothing on the board deals w/ those amperages. I looked pretty damn closely at the board inspecting for fried stuff, but I didn't see anything. It may come down to ordering a new chip. Stupid MS.

OK, I've got it accepting fresh software, but its still not working properly. I cycled w/ the boot jumper connected a few times then it would accept a flash. But when I turn the ignition on, I dont get a fuel pump prime, and megatune refuses to connect w/ it. None of the LEDs come on. I get a message saying I've got mismatched code on the board and asks to terminate. Ideas?

Hmm, after downloading the 029y4 code 5 times, things are 90% working now. LED's are back, connection is back, MT is happy.

No spark though. RPM signal is good, but it isn't grounding the coils.

OK, transistor module from the DSM thing is fried.

Moral of the story: Unplug your **** when changing software on MS.

2nd moral of the story: Put the boot jumper on and change software 5 times to revive a dead MS.

3rd moral: it is harder to kill MS than one may believe.

Well, I don't know.

Now, its doing this thing where it wont turn on w/o the boot loader jumped. You boot-jumper it, and it fires right up (grounds fuel pump, connects to MT). If you don't, nothing happens. Looks like I'm getting a new chip after all.

While I've got your attention, can someone give me some instructions on how to get easytherm to work? I feel retarded asking it, but I just cant seem to get it to do what its supposed to. It acts like everything is done properly, but all the times that I got the software loaded, the temp display was still incorrect. Is there an easier, more direct way of doing it than using easytherm?

that is strange, make sure the ground plane for the chip is still intact as well as the 5v feed.
