This is my new DD, so the current DD can be turned into a weekend car. The 242 was parked in the garage 13 years ago when a new car was bought, then never touched again. The windows were left open and all sort of dust and rodents got inside. There is also dust and rodent crap all over the roof of the car. The tires went flat, the gas turned bad, and she desperately needed love. I learned the car was in my neighbors garage 3 years ago, when my Dad bought a 1968 144S from him. For 3 years I kept hearing how he wanted my help to get it on the road so he could drive it again and I never pushed the issue, but he knew I wanted to buy it. After the stars aligned he realized he wasn't getting any younger and the car needed a new owner. We struck a deal and it was towed to my garage.

So far I've replaced the rear lights, front turn signals, all the belts, polished the valve cover a little, installed a K&N air filter, new plugs and wires, and a bunch of other crap that adds up to way too many weekends. At this point it should be running this weekend. Then I'll replace the brake calipers, pads, rotors, fluid, and lines. I'll also drain the differential and put in new fluid. Then I'll just need to pull out the interior and scrub everything down and it will be ready for duty.

The battery cables were so corroded I couldn't loosen them, so I cut them off at the terminals.

A mess of zipties in the trans coolant lines.

The old tails. Good, but not great.

Sparkly new tail lights.

This is the cover for the muffler. The top one came off the car, the bottom one went on after I coated it with bedliner.

I think the end link bushings are shot.

Pulled an old set of 25/22mm IPD sways out of the shed (still need to put the water pump pulley on)

That mess of zipties was replaces with new hoses and a single ziptie put on correctly.

Nice find, lucky it sat in a garage and not under a tree collecting rust holes. Rat **** is better then rust holes any day.

I haven't found any rust yet, but sitting in the driveway wouldn't have changed that. The 68 144S we pulled from the PO's driveway 3 years ago (yes, we bought both cars from the same guy) is my Dad's weekend driver and its just about rust free.

This would make a much better weekend car than the 89...

Nope, the 244 already sucks too much gas. Swapping go fast parts from the 244 to the 242 and returning the 244 back to stock would take way too much effort. A 242 is a great DD for me, since my long legs make it so when I look left out the 244 I'm actually looking out the back window. Plus, I've always wanted to DD a car thats older than me.

By the end of summer this car will be at stage 0 and I am going to spend a lot more time on the 142. I've let it sit too long and its about time I show it how much I love it, and the boy is begging to go for a ride in it.

A year and a half in and it still isn't running. I blame 60+ hour work weeks keeping me out of the garage. It has a new windshield now, most of the interior is back in, front armrest, turbo triple gauge pack, and power mirrors waiting to go in.

The no start issue seems to be the in tank pump. Pulled that and found a pile of rust, looking in the tank showed even more rust.

Grabbed a rust free tank from RSI, but it was dented. The dent kept the pump from being able to drop in. I beat a piece of wood into the dent with a hammer and just splintered the wood, so I got creative in my fix.

The gas tank is in, just waiting for new gas lines to ship now. Got the new rollers on though. The black virgos have 2 good tires, so I'll have to find two more before I can really put on miles.

It is painful to think I've owned this car for nearly three years and haven't put a single mile on it. Life has gotten in the way and this sat way on the back burner. The car runs and drives (in and out of the driveway), I just need to put the interior back together, smog it, and buy insurance.

She drives! We drove it around the block on Wednesday and it went pretty smooth, so we insured it Thursday and I ran a couple errands.

My notes after the first drive (more so I can remember):
-still needs a driver's seat belt
-defrost vents seem to be plugged
-might be dragging the front right brake
-I'm using the driver's seat out of my 89, still need to button up the original seat
-there are no front turn signals
-hazard switch doesn't do anything
-setting up the stereo in the lower slot, while you drive, is impossible
-center lights of the quad rounds seem to glow when the headlights are on
-needs a belly pan

I love this thing though. It glides over speed bumps and the only exhaust note is from the hole in the muffler. I can't wait to take care of the little things so I can DD this.

Ha! I literally just did this last night at 945 trying to make it to Coldstone before they closed!

Nice ride, it'll be a great daily.

Headlamps: 4x6 harness is wired differently than 5.75" round and 7" round. Same thing happens if E-code 4x6's are installed without repinning the harness plugs or using the adapters.

Wiper motor: Get an SWF unit (Nahnst?rt band on motor housing). Can swap brown and green wires for faster intermittent mode without having it turn into a 1/2 second delay, like what happens with the newer Electrolux motors.
