Early B230 Piston Knurling / Ceramic coatings

What does the coating process entail?
Dry ice or walnut shell blasting for adherence/no gritch embedded in the alloy piston & some sort of chemical/heat treatment?
Is it possible to clean around the rings w/steam jet & leave them on the pistons after you remove them from the short block surgically?
I don’t like sand, coal ash or slag or glass beads to clean anything if I can help it? (Unless it has no moving/working surfaces/parts & there’s some way to deal with the dust/environmental impact?).

It’s frustrating as the engine ‘works fine’ w/virtually no blowby efficiently, but it’s a little noisy cold in drive/taking off down the block under light load.

If I could magically remove the pistons gently & note the clocking of the rings & steam/ultrasonic them squeaky clean gently & magically apply coating & add squirters/coated late model oil pump & transfer pipe to the existing motor to try to get ~60 years out of one engine/car/set of super toxic non-us DOT scam date code Vanagon weight rated Michelin tires I could retread in my back yard, that’d be grrr8. Plz Halp? :please: Kthxbye?

Ishould be good ‘n dead/not driving anymore in ~60 years (or not hopefully if in good health w/(near)universal access to bio-medical advancement?)
If there even are roads & ICE dinosaur vehicles operated by humans at relaxing low stress distances apart from each other on the public? Roadways as we know them by then?

With a block heater, quality copper B230Ft oil/water heat exchanger & good oil, 2-5k miles/yr @ gentle cruise/good maintenance / not caring about smog/air pollution (much/within reason as a constraint) / exempt , ~100+ years should be possible from 1 hooptie ‘87 B230F in ‘mild’ (such as that’s going to be ‘a thing’ going forward?) climate/garaged car/carport?
Idk about temp cycles on the alloy head/timing belt engine? :grrr:

Pity the trans tunnel isn’t all that generously sized on the Volvo for some sort of electric assist in the trans bellhousing…
…how can I get a maneuverable space efficient vehicle w/20+ year production run w/external drip rails, foot vents, wing windows etc that’s smog/rules/recurring registration costs exempt?
Trying to achieve classic pre-smog 2-stroke Peterbilt long haul trucker longevity in miles & Massey/IH tractor/stationary engine longevity in years w/bite size/ obscure furrin’ midsize car (& budget, accordingly…this is TB?)?

^lulz  no way am I going to be able to achieve clean room standards, but a portable 20A quiet 0-clearance screw or wankel air compressor & oil pump would sure be nice?

Where does one get a dry ice blaster for the home scale & good ultrasonic plate for a heated tub to put pistons in for a couple weeks buzzing away until ultra clean & finished off w/steam?

Is rings still on pistons a :nono: if sending them out for coating if masked off/no oil? Maybe the fear I have of bending used rings around to reinstall them the way they were when removed & working ‘fine’ & factory setup is a bit irrational? (Idk what I’m doing I’m neither a trained nor experienced/proficient machinist, diagnostician, engine assembler or engineer in the relevant field).

You’ll want to pull the rings off. Not the end of the world. I’d toss in some new rings and deglaze the bores at the very least…. But you TB as much as you want to TB .

For cleaning them, soda blasting and a cheap ultrasonic would be a great option. Or just soda blast and run them in the dishwasher.
