Hello all, I am new to Volvos and started with this beauty:

Dennis is a 1992 740 Turbo Wagon
He's had a pretty hard life so far, but he is still running like a champ with 257K miles on the clock!
So far, I have done a complete service, added IPD Lowering Springs/shocks/struts, an IPD Boost Gauge, and a TurboSmart MBC
In the near future (they are on back order) I'll be adding the IPD Camshaft & Adjustable Gear Kit, new water and power steering pumps, timing belt kit, and Front & Rear Anti-Sway Bar Kit as well as the complete suspension bushing kit, also from IPD.
The biggest challenge will be the interior refresh as he had a water leak once upon a time, so the headliner is complete grot and the front seats are brittle, cracked, and torn (not to mention the state of the dash and other plastics)
Happy to be here and absorb all the knowledge on offer.

Hello! Welcome to turbobricks. This place is mostly good and off topic is awful. Sounds like you’ve got some experience working on cars already. Is your car an auto or manual?

Also fyi, you will need to shim the valves when changing the camshaft. If you don’t need to drive the car right away, you can install the cam, run it and get it warm, and then figure out what shims you need to order. If you want the job done in an afternoon, you’ll have to rent a shim kit.

He's an auto. I assumed I'd need to shim it, so thanks for confirming (but I've never done it before, so I'll be watching lots of youtube :) )

I just installed a b cam in my 92 244 so let me know if you have any questions.

The thing that gave me the most grief was the timing belt tensioner. I just pulled the old belt off without doing anything but what I think you should do is pull on the old timing belt hard so that it moves the tensioner back and then tighten the tensioner in it’s fully retracted position before pulling the old belt.

Thanks. I am replacing everything, including the tensioner, tensioner spring, tensioner spring guide, and much more. :)

You’re an overachiever. I just replaced seals, belts, shims, water pump, and camshaft. If you’re planning on replacing the hushers, you’ll need to do so after you’ve set the valve gaps.

Welcome to the best forum left (or ever to be IMO)
As far as the timing belt tensioner just pry it back with a large screwdriver/pry bar and lock it with the nut

Welcome aboard. FYI the timing belt tensioner has a hole in the guide pin so when the tensioner is loosened. You can compress the tensioner and then install a pin or a nail in the hole and it holds the tensioner retracted.
