hello all!
i was doing some research and came accross a tid-bit of information. on a marine board i read that it is possible to use a A2 VW golf tensioner on a AQ171  i emailed the guy who wrote the post but he has not written back as of yet.

i went to autozone [where my girl works - guess how i met her ;-) ] and had her grab me one from the back. it looks _just_ like this one:

after looking at Js and my 16v heads it looks like we would need the hole to be abit bigger for the 16v but other then that it looks just like the one in the picture. any thoughts?

oh it was like $35

from what i've heard you can pick up a AQ171 Tbelt and tensioner for $50 new, i might be able to sell them for this cost but i'll find out when my supplier gets things figured out
but yea being that an AQ171 is a b230 w/ a 16V head it will/should bolt up perfect

i'd be more interested in the vw one, cuz then i can go to almost any parts store anywhere when i need to replace it down the road. plus its cheap, i'm cheap, etc.
now if we could just find a way to make a ex mani out of old paper towel rolls and duct tape, i'll be set.

16V inlet mainifold

Hey that's a nice looking 16V setup! Totally professional job. I would be really interested to know what you have done with the inlet manifold. It's my next project on the 740T racecar. Now that I've finally solved engine reliability issues (Yes, I'm now running the "last 16V race motor" and it has been running fine for 4 race meetings) I'm about to start on a custom intake mani. The stock B234F intake with the larger T/B needs significant trim on 2+3 injectors to get uniform spark plug readings, now that I've been able to "tune out" detonation with a custom knock sensor.

I'm guessing that's not Jao's car... just a picture he posted to illustrate the point. Damn fine, tho!

I was planning on doing that very thing to the 16v head I have here - I seem to recall that my wife's Golf uses a larger stud, so the head may have to be drilled and tapped for it, but it should do nicely.

They're very cheap and extremely plentiful.

$50 for an AQ-171 tensioner is AWESOME, though - on Doug Russel Marine they're like $190! Buy two and have one as a spare, and you probably don't have to do any mods to the head.

that car looks like a 240. but then again how would the rear mount dizzy fit?

more info

the guy emailed me back and this is what he says:
"Hi

The only modifications needed to fit the VW Golf MK2 GTI tensioner is
to put
3-4mm of spacers between the cyl. head and the tensioner.

The tensioning operation is though a bit more difficult with the VW
tensioner than with the original Penta one, but no hard operation. The
VW
tensioner has 2 small 1-2mm holes, that i think some kind of tool is
meant
to be connected to, to put tension on the belt with. But i simply
pushed the
tensioner with a metal-pipe to get the belt to the right tension."

sounds like we have a winner freinds!

The VW tool to use on the tensioner is a spanner with two pins on it. You insert the pins
and rotate the tensioner to the appropriate tension on the belt. It's about a $10 or so tool
from just about any VW parts supplier anywhere.

Have a look at ravenexus' 242. He has a 740 engine swap in his.
He might be able to shed some light on it.
cause when you put a B234F in you have to arse around with engine mounts anyway, and seen as they were using a getrag box they had to extend the shifter setup too so they just mounted the engine a couple of inch's further forwards

oh and thats using a modded hall sensor dizzy to work with EZ118K from a B230E and L-jet

VW parts in a Volvo? What's next :-P

That tensioner tool is KEY to getting the belt tension right. I would NOT tension a 16v motor without it!! You can use pliers if you're careful and can have someone else tighten the bolt while you're holding it. You'll probably have to try a few times before you get it right.

Again, double then quadruple check the belt tension. It's a mess if it flys off.. right guys?

back from the dead post pile.

Is that aq171 part a spring loaded tensioner, or is it simmilar setup to the VW one.

Lets hope mike gets a line on those tensioners ;)

So what is the point of this tensioner? Just a cheaper replacement for the B234 one, or an upgrade or a special tensioner for a differtent engine setup?
