IPD replacement front 240 springs to large in diameter?

After overhauling the suspension on my 1993 240 wagon, including replacing the sagging front springs with stock ride height IPD replacement springs

https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4923/106759-stock-height-coil-spring-front

I began to experience spring pop sounds from the front right strut when turning corners.

I've traced this to the top of the spring shifting in the top steel spring retaining plate, which sits just below the upper strut mount. It appears the ID of the spring is at least 1/4" larger in diameter than the inside lip of the retaining plate, allowing the top of the spring to pop back and forth in that slop. I can confirm this by grabbing the top of the spring while the car is sitting on the ground and manually popping the spring back and forth in that retaining plate, producing the same sound I hear while driving.

I assume IPD sells these springs sourced from another vehicle application that just so happens to be close to the Volvo requirements. I have never experienced this slop with an OEM spring.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with the stock ride height IPD replacement springs?

Are they mounted upside down? I put a set of the IPD lowering springs on my car, and the pigtail at the top has the dead coil. If you install them upside down the spring will shift on the mount.

I'm sure I considered the orientation during install, but I seem to recall it was hard to tell if the springs were asymmetric vertically. I don't remember seeing an obvious dead coil on one end. Even in the product picture on IPD's webpage, the spring ends look pretty similar.

However, this seems like a good idea to double check. If true, and only my right side has been doing it, it stands to reason I should see a difference between the left and right side springs.

How can you tell which is top or bottom? I just got Lesjofors fronts and they look identical on each side. These looks similar to the ipd ones. Sounds like you got lucky with the drivers sound and put the passenger side upside down.

I called IPD about these springs and they told me the more closely wound coil is supposed to be on top. I can't honestly tell now that they're installed, the same amount of dead coil appears on the tops of both of mine.

Does anyone know if both sides are wound in the same direction? As in, both should be installed with coils going counter clockwise or clockwise? Or opposing winding directions on each side?

That looks upside down.
