It lives! Low buck 240DL->240 Turbo swap

I heard a hissing sound under boost and remembered that the little gasket had torn when I took the compressor housing off. I also noticed that I could not pressurize the intake with my leak tester when it was on the turbo inlet so I knew it was a large leak. I replaced the gasket today, the old gasket was almost totally gone. No more hissing, no more smoking under boost.

Well, my muffler started rattling and buzzing so I got pissed and ripped the damn thing off. I figured it would sound better straight piped than with the muffler buzzing loudly all the time like it's going to fall off. This warrants exhaust sound videos...

Nice project! I like it. I have a B230ft I want to swap into my 244ti k-jet but the wiring was making me say no, but this thread has given me hope! How's the car coming along? Do anything to the rust yet?

I think the problem is with the horns. A 240 sounds like a golf cart. With double the horns it'll sound like a very angry golf cart.

When you're at the JY, cruise the GM section. Late '60s and early '70s caddys came with three horns tuned to a chord. They are extremely loud and sound cool. I have two sets (6 horns) on my 240. Other drivers leave their skin when I honk.

Do it! Converting to LH or MS isn't hard. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a B21FT that had been converted for LH use. As for the rust, I'm not doing anything with it, see my thread here: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=207168

I don't know what kind of 240 horns you've been listening to but my 240 sounds nothing like a golf cart. I've had 4 stock horns since I got it running, it's very loud and forceful sounding. I know all about caddy horns, but good luck finding anything that old in the junkyards around here.

Here's the 240 as of today:

I blacked out the grille and added a turbo badge from an old supra I found rotted away in the junkyard. I tried to get the CT-26 off it but couldn't get the oil return line off and had no access to cut it. Oh well.

Did you have to add a relay when you did the 4 horn thing?

I've got an extra set of horns here that I yanked from the '88 before I scrapped it. I want loud mother****ing horns.

And no, 240 horns don't sound like golf cart horns. They're basically Hella Supertones. They just didn't call them that back then.

Got some power in the mail this week

16tvs13c.jpg

At the left, my newest score, a 16t. But it gets better.

ported16t.jpg

It's ported very nicely.

13c.jpg

A stock 13c for comparison.

contrasty.jpg

An ultra high contrast image for the purpose of comparing the two.

The 16t will be put on my car this week, mounted on my freshly ported 90+ manifold, which I will post an image of later.

Begin: Operation $150 3" exhaust

3inchparts.jpg

This stuff plus 5 ft of straight pipe arrived this week. Total cost: $110. That leaves $40 for a turndown, brackets and welding.

Hope you mean a turnout?

You will hate your life, yes all of it, for running a turndown ed0t- under the car.

Can't be worse than what I've got now. An open downpipe terminating under the passenger footwell. My ears ring after even a short drive.

I'll eventually extend the exhaust out to a rear exit when I can afford the extra piping.

Plus, I ran an open exit from the same type of muffler on my 2.5" system and it was completely tolerable.

No, I haven't finished the exhaust yet. I can't find anyone to weld it up for me cheaply. I did, however, acquire 23/21mm swaybars and a splash pan for a grand total of $26. Body roll is greatly reduced, now I just have to replace my blown rear struts.

Keep the B21!!

That's my plan and it should be yours too.
