Jared's '79 5.3 244 Project: The Qwikbrik

Yeah it's a problem caused by the pivot being an inch or so lower with the American gearboxes. I had a pretty good result with a B5.5 VW passat shifter on top a cut down rubber boot (the plastic clip would wrap around the boot's base semi-tightly) and an automatic bezel cut down and glued to make it all look a bit more cohesive. It was nice but the shift knob was 2-3" lower than I would have liked.

I didn't think about putting an auto shifter surround down there. Luckily since just the screws poke through the carpet for the snaps I'll be able to take them off and you wont' be able to tell they were there.

Turns out it's not the tie rod that's bad, but the rack itself. Bummer.

I've got leads on a couple, shouldn't be too bad to find a replacement. Nick has one down in Greenville but it's gonna be a pain to pull apparently. If that doesn't work out, Dean has one.

I screwed my rack up (somewhat mildly) when swapping in the steel steering shaft - the alu u-joint was STUCK on the rack and I tried a variety of gentler methods before resorting to BRUTE FORCE. It finally popped loose and cam off, but the shaft on the rack was a bit 'wiggly', and it's been seeping fluid ever since.

But yeah, rebuilts are NLA, about the only thing I saw for a long while was $400 rebuild services where you send your rack in for a month or two. I was searching a week or so ago and happened across a rebuilt one (with a hefty $250 core charge) on eBay. It arrived yesterday. Opened it up annnnnnd its the wrong kind. Despite the picture on eBay clearly being a late model TRW rack (matching what's on mine) they sent a ZF.

Yeah, mine is the rack shaft has some radial play. I assume there's a bushing or something for that, and between my superheated fluid and my uh...suboptimal...tie rod angle, plus the wide sticky tires, it's died a premature death. I pulled this rack from a '93 about a year ago.

I am using a Cadillac one and am mildly kicking myself for it as it required a lot more modification than this one would. I'm sure you can find them for cheaper than $100 new also.

Nice. I just walked around the junkyard til I found something on a Bronco that looked about right.

Cooler mounted:

I will say that I'm not usually a believer in snake oil, but the Royal Purple power steering fluid actually made a huge difference. Even with the cooler, the fluid would still foam up and the pump would start groaning after awhile. After swapping the fluid for the Royal Purple stuff, I've had zero issues.

Question for ya, the accelerator pedal for my setup is hacked together and it's too close to the brake pedal. Which one are you using? What are my options for a better dbw pedal?

i didnt read back very far but did you swap relief valves in the pump?

Yep, the one from a B230F/T power steering pump threads right into the Camaro pump. The 91+ 240 high pressure line fits beautifully if you're using the same accessory drive setup I am.

No idea. Mine's a cable throttle because I'm a boomer millenial.

The flow control valve is the part that threads in. The pressure relief is the floating piston and spring that are underneath that part.

Did you swap both out?

And I left the Corvette parts in the pump I got with the rest of the Corvette front end kit, just did hoses between the two and it's been fine.

Well, other than the damage I did during the swap removing the u-joint. OTHER THAN THAT the racks been pretty fine, even with the input wobbling around a little.

So hear me out: I'm a dumbass.

I went and grabbed a spare rack from Nick and slammed it in. Buttoned it back up and it...sounds the exact same.

Derrick checked Morgan's car. Sounds the same. Kyle's 240? Sounds the same.

So apparently I'm just chasing a dragon here. Perfect.

I'm gonna slam the original rack back in there since at least I know it steers and doesn't leak and keep this one as a backup I guess.

Much ado about nothing.

Tie rods
Alignment
Windshield
Fix my broken e-brake cable (probably do this tomorrow)

I think that's it.

Tie rods are done
Ebrake works

Windshield was supposed to happen today but Safelite didn't get the glass ordered. Found a different company that claims they can get one by the 15th, Safelite rescheduled for the 16th. Hopefully one of those will work.

Alignment is tomorrow morning.

Spent yesterday waxing/polishing the car and getting it cleaned up for mountainmeet. Windshield is confirmed to have arrived at the glass shop, so that should be happening this Thursday.

I do get a high speed wobble/oscillation in the steering wheel when I?m in a sweeper turn and hit a bump. It didn?t do this before adding the QSRCs.

It was suggested on FB that this could be due to play in the steering rack and/or the toe setting of the alignment. I haven?t dig through the forum to see if anyone else found a resolution but I?ll also say that with the middle hole utilized on the QSRCs the power steering feels under assisted at slow speeds . I?m not sure if it?s a belt slip thing, or not enough pressure/volume from the pump.

This feels like something I?m going to have to work through iteratively, starting with the rack I think.
