Looking to build up a 940 turbo, need advice

I'm not expecting to utilise the car at the limit with them in it obviously.

Budget is maybe 10-12k excluding the purchase of the car. My personal skillset is quite limited, but I've done some basic stuff in the past. I did an engine swap in my previous project (from one OEM model to a later OEM one, no fabrication), big brake install, clutch replacement, shock and spring replacement, some electronic gremlin debugging.

I'd be looking to upskill for this project though, and have help from friends who are more experienced at this.

I'm also not intending to do the big engine work up front. My idea is to do a little engine bolt on stuff, suspension and brakes first, and see if I love the car enough to go the whole 9 yards. I understand that the initial engine modifications would need to be replaced again when taking things further.

I was expecting having to replace rods and pistons, and have to have some porting done on the head.
If you’re planning to spend that much just LS swap it.

If you’re planning to spend that much just LS swap it.

That's not possible for multiple reasons, and not something I want either.

  1. LS engine is not available in my market
  2. Engine swaps cannot be registered and insured for road use on the roads in my country
  3. Even if it was, a 6L car would cost around 7k in annual road tax here

User @shoestring has a wicked 940 build. Ask him for advice. I believe he makes a fair bit over 300hp with factory internals, an rsi cam (don't quote me on that) larger injectors and a 19t turbo. Intercooler as well
Close. User @redblockpowered has a good 940 build. 234whp with stock internals, V15T cam, and 15G with 7cm angled turbine housing (plus tune, of course). He's made some small advances since then but hasn't had it back on the dyno since.

We've got the same address so I see how you may have gotten us crossed up :p.

I'm working on the 244 with the BMW 6 speed. It fits better than an M47.

300hp is much more realistic for your goals. 400hp could be unreliable, and not the most driveable car. For 400+ you’ll need a big turbo and you loose all the low end, so if your driving the car a lot, with family and road trips. You don’t want that.

Go with 300 hp. Classic turbo bricks setup, 19t or t3/t4. Forge rods stock ( but new ) pistons and rings. A good cam, ipd cam or some kl racing options. 3 inch exhaust, 3 inch maf, 440cc injectors, do88 intercooler, ac/tropic rad, few additional gauges, ttv flywheel, upgraded pcv system, chips, and a few other little bits. Very reliable and nice to drive setup

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take that into account!

Which BMW gearbox is that?

Is there an adaptor plate for it already?

BMW ZF boxes are usually welded with Volvo bellhousing. The adapter plate doesn't work, the clutch shaft is too short.

ZFs are strong boxes but ratios aren't that good. 1st gear is very low so 3,31 or 3,15 rear end ratio is needed to keep 1st gear usable.
Good thing is that ZFs are "cheap". Modified ZF cost around 900 EUR.
https://www.lensupowershop.fi/ for example is one vendor.

1st gear in a ZF is better than an M46 I think. The ZF (and every BMW 5 speed after the E30's Getrag 260) is 1:1 5th. 3:31 would be pretty brisk. The 6 speeds have an overdrive 6th.

These are the most common boxes in Finland, usually sourced from mid-European junkyards. Is 1st gear M46 4,2:1?
