240 M47 into a 1982 242?

We have a Canadian market 242GLT, with the B23E engine
(non-turbo).

The transmission (M46) sucks, it is getting hard to get it into
first gear, and shifts in general suck.

The tranny and clutch are original to the car. The car has
320,000km (about 200,000 miles).

I managed to pull a M47 from a 1990 244 at the pick-a-part today,
along with the driveshaft and instrument cluster.

Assuming that all looks good once cleaned up and peeked into, I'd
like to install it into the GLT.

This is my wife's car, and won't be abused (much) so I'm not too
worried about the M47 being weaker. She is excited about having a
"proper" 5th gear though.

I'd like to buy a new clutch also, and this is my first question:

Do I get a clutch for the '82, or for the '90?

1982 clutch kit:

1990 clutch kit:

According to the Fitment Guide on FCP's website, the clutches are
the same, ID: 1, TEETH: 22T, the only difference is the OD, the
'82 being 8.5 and the '90 being 9.

My guess is that I get the clutch that matches the flywheel,
rather than the tranny, as the tooth count is the same, but the
OD differs.

If someone could set me straight on this, I'd appreciate it.

I did pull the driveshaft with the tranny, so that part is
sorted.

I also grabbed the speedo, as the M47 has no mechanical drive for
speedo. The car has a G80 in it already, so it has a tone ring. I
have a diff cover with the VR sensor that I can swap on, but the
G80 is ABS, and the speedo is non-ABS. Short of cutting three of
every four teeth, is there another way of hooking up the speedo?

Any tips on wiring up the VR sensor in the diff to the speedo?

Thanks for any advice, I'm hoping to get this sorted out in time
to use the cyber20 code at FCP.

you need to get the 215mm/8.5" clutch that will work with the flat flywheel used on the '82. but you'll also need the M47 release bearing which is different from the M46 (different clutch forks). could probably use the M46 clutch fork in the M47, don't see why not. I'm using an M46 fork in my bell housing that came from an M47, for my T5 swap. no problem there.

can't help with hooking up the speedo, but I think you're stuck with either reducing the tooth count to 12, or getting a speedo head from an ABS 240.

Okay, that was my hunch on the clutch. Good to hear I was on the
right track.

Ah, the release bearing was something I hadn't considered. Thank
you, you just saved me a weeks downtime on this car.

Well, I guess I do have a M46 fork, or two kicking around, but I
will order the correct release bearing with the new parts.

I'm thinking that I will try to make/buy a device that can do a
divide-by-four on the VR signal between the diff and the speedo.

Thanks for the help Mike.
