Hi, I in the process of doing this swap. I have an ‘84 AW71L w/ OD shifter, adapter plate from Huke, going Into my ‘74 164 w/ BW35. I plan on using my original shifter and installing an IPD O/D Solenoid block off plate, as I don’t need to deactivate the O/D. It will still shift into O/D, I just won’t have the button on the shifter to turn off O/D.Yeah I think it's the way to go. This car is a luxury cruiser lol
Last night I replaced the bushings in the linkage between the shifter and the transmission. The rod literally came off in my driveway moving it around. Thank goodness it didn't fall off on the 3 1/2 hour trip back from Asheville. Big thanks to Hi Performance Auto for the bushings.
Tech tip: Best way I found to install these bushings is to heat them up with a heat gun first to make them a little more pliable

Get a fake mullet?I took it to a hotrod show last weekend, but it didn't really fit in.

I’m planning to keep the column shifter and just put the solenoid block off plate for the OD. It’ll be a while before I start my swap.Hi, I in the process of doing this swap. I have an ‘84 AW71L w/ OD shifter, adapter plate from Huke, going Into my ‘74 164 w/ BW35. I plan on using my original shifter and installing an IPD O/D Solenoid block off plate, as I don’t need to deactivate the O/D. My question to you is; are you using the BW35 shifter or the AW71 shifter with O/D button/switch?
TIA
Thanks for the update. Good info there.Hey Mate,
Doing this exact swap in my ‘84 164 w/ Huke’s adapter. Undecided on shifter however. The AW71 shifter has all the switches on the shifter; (O/D, Reverse light, and Neutral Safety). The BW35 has them on a switch that screws into the left side of the trans. just forward of the shifter linkage. So, this will require some wiring changes, regardless of shifter used. Besides, I like the originaI look of the stock shifter. I too got the O/D block off plate from IPD, I doubt I would ever shift out of O/D anyway. I can always add a relay & dash switch to disable the O/D.
With the additional 2” (49 mm) of Huke’s adapter, moving the entire transmission towards the rear, in addition to shortening the front driveshaft, the shifter rod will need to be lengthened to reach the shifter actuator on the side of the AW71L.
The other issue I’m dealing with is the analog speedometer cable. It looks like the BW35 Speedo gear from the BW35, fits perfectly on the AW71L output shaft. The AW71L output shaft housing has a casting for the Speedo gear, but it is not drilled through the housing, as the equipped the donor car with an electronic digital Speedo and the BW35 tail housing will not bolt up to the AW71L trans. This will require having the AW71L tail shaf housing machined to accept the Speedo drive gear and retainer bolt, it looks pretty straightforward.
The Dipstick comes up on the opposite side by dizzy, and the cooler lines should be a slam dunk with hoses, instead fo steel lines. The other issue is the shift-down cable…TBD!
Nobody said it would be plug n’ play, but thus far the swap is moving in the right direction and it will be nice to get better gas mileage and reduced rpm’s at highway speed!
I hope yours goes well!
I think I'm good with the current ride height. Next will be the AW71 and fuel injection, then I'll move onto more creature comforts like a new but vintage looking Bluetooth radio.Hey Mike, I just want to comment that you have quite the sexy 164. Oh, and have you done any more thinking on air suspension? I'm toying with the idea myself on my 71 164
