760 Missing exhaust mani bolts

I found out yesterday, once I drove my "new" 87 760Ti about 400km, that 2 bolts for the exhaust manifold are...not there...on the #1 cylinder. I know the manifolds are different for the NA and T engines, but do the bolts fit the same? Could I scavenge some off an 88 740? Both are B230's.

Hang on, there should not actually be any bolts, there should be studs (ie. threaded rod) poking out of the head, and then you use nuts to hold the manifold to the head.

Bolts aren't going to work; if they truly are bolts, that needs fixing.

Now, the studs are the same between n/a & turbo engines. However, they're also dirt cheap, you should be able to get them for next to nothing brand-new. I say this because they're going to be pretty difficuly to get out of a corroded old aluminium head in a wrecker/junkyard, without damaging the thread.

Or are you talking about something else? If someone has used bolts, you really should replace them all with studs. And make sure to get locking nuts, otherwise they'll loosen off & you'll be blowing exhaust-manifold gaskets left right & centre.

indeed. or the studs broke and there's part of it stuck in there. probe with a small wooden dowel, coffee straw or something else that will not damage the delicate aluminum threads.

FTFY there, i found that out the hard way.

except as noted, i agree with what forg wrote up there.

FCP has good lock nuts. i can not recommend you buy the studs there until the iron out a slight issue with part numbering.

you can get fast access to factory volvo studs and washers through swedishengineering.com, call 'em up and ask for ben, he knows! others have claimed you can use studs from atpturbo.com or NAPA but i have not compared those directly yet.

My wording was incorrect, but ok, the *studs* are...not there.

Oh boy.

Hopefully (considering the possibilities) the studs are just not there, and not broken off, right?

Before I do, how deep do the threads go in the head? i.e. How far, if the studs are just missing, should my [straw/device] go?

I didn't remove any.

It's something my dad noticed when he reconnected the IAC hose (I drove that 400km with 2 feet >_> )

What are possible longer-term consequences of driving like this?

Also.

What can I expect to pay to have this repaired? I have neither the space nor experience to repair this.

you haven't given us enough information here to answer those questions. i see you are part of the ontario brickers social group, is that where you live? i don't know how many studs need to be repaired, either- you need to find that out first. the one that came off my 780 had two broken studs and a completely stripped hole.

i fixed the single broken stud on my 244 without removing the head, but i was very lucky. typically the head is removed, repaired by a machine shop, and then reinstalled. if you are not doing this yourself it can be quite expensive.

So far as I can tell, only the 2 studs of the #1 cylinder are broken.

The plan now is to rent a storage space for a month (taking perhaps 4-6hours/week) and removing the head with the assistance of my father. I'm planning on replacing all the studs, and the exhaust, intake, and head gaskets as well. Any other considerations while I'm this deep into the engine?

If you're going to all that trouble, maybe check everything maintenance-related with the engine?
It shouldn't involve many more parts than you've already described, just a bit more time.

I'm definitely not a get repository for what needs doing, all I can think of is the flametrap &/or the piping from the oil-breather in the crankcase all the way back to the intake.

Actually, maybe do a search on this board for "Stage 0", that's what such a clean-up is referred-to 'round here.
