Oil catch can. It works! (no 56K)

I installed it this past June together with my 531 head. While checking the oil dip stick. i decided to take a quick glance at the sight gauge and to my amazement it was half full.

(Engine bay shot) Oil catch can is right next to the intercooler pipe. You can see the two yellow braided lines. They were once clear and transparent but the heat changed their color.

Drained 1 1/4 cup (10 oz.)

I can't believe how all this stuff would have contaminated my intake. All of this accumulated in approx 6 months. Btw, the catch can is not one of the fancy name brand ones. I paid $36 for it on Ebay. Given these results, I would say it's a definite must if you have a worked head and don't want to lose a few ponnies to all this contamination. You also get to save your amm to turbo hose as well.

Damn, that is a lot of oil. I just drained my intercooler the other day and got about a 1/4 of a cup. I'm almost tempted to put one of these in my car now.

yes, actually canola oil... goes right into the deep-fryer

the whole reason behind it is to allow the oil vapor to condense and deposit in the can, rather than enter and muck up your intercooler, intake piping, intake manifold, etc.... these are vapors that are "sucked up" from the crankcase evacuation system as part of a normally running engine... we're just diverting them...

They work great... unless you don't have a check level on it and it fills up, so that it looks like you've blown your headgasket... I'm going to pick one of these up for my bimmer, i'm passing a bit of oil from the breather into the intake for some reason.

The oil in that measuring cup was convincing enough. I'm sure my motor produces even more than that. I get like a teaspoon after every hard run, just sitting in the intake tubing! So now I bought a catch can on ebay. Thanks for the info.


A note for those hooking these up.. here's what you do to make sure the PCV system still works properly:
Crankcase/valve cover line that used to go straight to the PCV valve must go through the catch can before it goes to the throttle body.
The breather(s) they are usually connected to the air intake tubing so they can get filtered air; keep in mind the vacuum is past the throttle body so air doesn't get sucked through.. anyway, instead of having them go through the intake tube, either run 'em through a seperate catch can, or just use those mini ricer cone air filters they sell at Autozone to clean atmospheric air. Air enters the motor through these to replace the air sucked out by engine vacuum for the PCV valve. The reason you can get oil out of these sometimes is jsut because of the oil vapor in the air in the motor. It sucks to have it condense into the intake, since that would negate the reason for running the PCV line through the catch can!

Well I suppose that would depend though... since my S.O. can't cook a lick (to my knowledge) then it wouldnt be an issue other than "ewww get your nasty car stuff outta here".

I wish i had a sweet setup in need of a catch can

Here's a question...what if the bottom of the catch can had a nipple on the bottom that would let it drain back into the pan? Maybe with a 1-way check valve? That way oil would blow through into the can, but not be re-introduced into the intake, and then drain back into the engine where it needs to be.
