Papa I need a car - 1984 245 DL - son's first car

IPD sells ABA clamps by the eaches.

If you don't want the shiny silicone look (I fuckin know you don't) and haven't filled your radiator yet you can scrub the hoses with 0000 steel wool and then rub them down with (real) talc.
ipd sells them surprisingly cheap

I dont mind the shiny black but that does look good, I didnt get hassled the last couple of times when I went to smog
Here's an example. I did my 3" inlet hose so hopefully the smogman don't notice my ways.
You can keep going and really get the sheen out but it's a bit time consuming.
that looks good

Belmetric sells ABA clamps individually at reasonable prices but I’m not sure if they have the 316SS versions

thats the website I was looking for
perfect, thank you!

I got the old style condenser sides powder coated and riveted to the new one

I got the puller fan mostly installed. I ordered new rubber insulators from amazon because volvo wants $10 each. The length of the bolt has to be trimmed. I need extend the bracket that goes behind the passenger headlight

heater fan wasnt spinning on the bench unless I had the box sitting sideways, replaced it with a new volvo one

the new volvo fan is a little different, condom for the wiring does not fit until you trim some of the box down.

I had to make this hole wider - toward the opening where wiring exits the box

now fits properly

driver rear trim is on

Man, that looks so overwhelming!
not too bad, only the wiring is stupid because it just lays there. I added tape with labels to help me remember

today

I didnt realize how bad the original dash was, so I pulled one from a 1990 today. I'll check other yards this weekend to see if I’ll actually install this one. If I find a better one I'll return it. If not, I'll try to fill the cracks on this one.

old blower motor was toast (note the difference in the box, I wouldn't have to trim this one to make the new motor insulation work)

I was gonna say $14k for a car in 1984 is a pretty nice car
my mom is a second owner of 1984 380sl - sticker price was $52-54k - nuts

I didnt find any nicer dashes that the JYs this weekend so I refreshed this one a bit. Filled the cracks with Sikaflex-221, cleaned it up with MEK and
today I did a quick coat of SEM trim paint

heater vents have holes all over from factory and the staples holding the 1/2 together create gaps. I used 3m aluminum foil tape 3340 thanks to @240 240 suggestion, I was afraid that the stuff you get a home chepo would eventually dry and start to come off.

Stupid dash is making me crazy, for some reason I had to pull the steering column out because I could not get the brackets to install properly, but Im making progress. Took me forever to clean off all the goop from wring, it would have been easier to do while the dash was out

exhaust manifold installed, PO has #4 top stud replaced with an oversize one

Love the black exhaust manifold, looking good!

triple gauges are there for show, not hooked up yet

installing the bracket for the knee bolster and newer style hood release took me longer than expected.

I used one of these (dash alignment) for the firewall/hood cable hole

Love the progress!

My 86 245 came with a fresh airbag dash, if you don't have that lower bolster can you still make it work or does it look like shit?

I would want the bolster to complete the look. Also need different center stack cover, and the driver side support that has the pickup points for the bolster substructure. His 2nd pic in last post you can see the difference compared to a pre airbag
