240 Parking emergency brake handle - button popped out with spring partially sticking out

Too much cable slack combined with pulling the lever too far up.

Grab the lever (with both hands if need be) and pull back just a little further; push the button back in and it should release. Then remove the parking brake / seat belt cover and tighten the cables.

If you are unable tighten the cables up enough to take up the slack, then you either need new parking brake shoes or new parking brake cables (or both - worse case scenario).

^This.

You might need a wooden block to depress the button while pulling it up farther. You want to have it adjusted so 5 clicks provides full braking power. There's a bolt at the back of the handle, which adjusts both cables. If you can't get it tight enough after cranking down on that bolt, then tighten the nuts on the cables themselves.

Hello, thanks much for input. Do you mean release brakes or re-engage handle mechanism? The brakes are not stuck or froze on brakes or anything and the brake lever or handle moves up and down with button and spring sticking out - but does not engage brake cables and feels spongy.

I tried what was suggested. The button and spring push back in lever easily, but pops back out whether lever is down or pulled up. There is no clicking when pulling up handle and the button and spring pop back out if not held in when pulled up about 6" or held in and putting handle down. There is increased resistance when raising, though feels spongy, without any clicks when pulling up and did not want to try to force up any further to avoid further problem.

You need to remove the console for proper autopsy. 2 screws on the sides - slide it forward and see what broke.

What you describe in your initial post is a common 240 problem on cars with factory cables and parking brake shoes (I've seen cars with over 200k miles on factory parking brake parts - not mine, LOL).

Anyway, the problem you describe in your last post IS NOT a normal 240 problem. From what you describe, it sounds as if the handle ratcheting mechanism has failed.

Dissection and inspection will be required for a repair.

Thank you. I had a feeling it was in the mechanism and not a snapped cable. I'll remove cover and see if I can locate ratchet issue and related.
