Questions about a 5 speed

I currently have a 82 244 tic and it has the manual 4 spd w/ od. I am having some probs with the od and I am wondering if there is a 5 spd tranny that will bolt up to my motor, I am sure it sounds like a dumb question but i am new to the whole volvo thing.

Thanks alot

Joe

John Parker (www.v-performance.com) sells parts to mate a ford T5 to our cars. It's not a complete kit yet but he can supply most of the big pieces. The stock M46 just plain sucks IMHO. It's a real limiting factor when you decide to add more power to your car. Check the article section of this forum to see other members installs.

if it is so good, do you have one? :-P let me throw my few cents.. heh. getrag 265 is another option, but a direct bolt up? t5 and getrag will require custom tranny cross member brackets for the tranny mount and lengthening of the driveshaft.. not exactly bolt up.. some folks on here beat the hell out of m47's.. you can always give that a shot if you want to avoid customizing.. but i would suggest posting in the maintenence forum.. or do a search.. to find out if it is a simple fix

good luck,

M47

Which models would i be able to find a m47? I am still learning about volvos so bear with me.

The m47 is a 5 spd tranny that will bolt up with no mods ie driveshaft shortening or lengthning????

Thanks in advance

Joe

The M47 was found in '87 and later 240 and 740 models. It's a true 5 speed, so it has no overdrive unit on the back, which makes it shorter. If you get one from a 240, get the driveshaft as well. It uses a rubber bushing at the point of connection to the transmission, unlike the M46. The M47 is an aluminum case transmission, so it is considerably lighter than the M46 iron case, and still lighter than the M46 aluminum case because of the overdrive on the M46.

It bolts up to any b21/23/230, no modifications needed, and it has the same gear ratios as the M46 (5th gear is slightly different, but they're both in the .78-.80 to 1 range).

tranny swaps

I changed a 1986 244DL from 4spd with o/d to a M47 5spd. This was really easy and straight forward. The 1986 has an electric speedometer. Your car uses a mechanical cable driven speedo. So whatever tranny you choose you have to make a speedo work. You need the driveshaft, shifter mounting, shifter, throwout bearing and of course the trans.

There isn't a speedo output on the trans so you will either have to install one by getting early M47 parts, install a rear with the speedo output sensor or come up with something else to drive a speedometer. It's a bit of work to come up with some type of speedometer setup.

You must decide where your plans are going. For really large increases in power a stronger replacement trans is a great (and the only) way to go. If you are keeping your mods in the zone of around 200hp on the engine you're probably going to be fine with a Volvo trans. Keep in mind these are approximate numbers. Depending on wear and driving style a Volvo trans may handle more or less power.
