R-sport cluster question

Why are the numbers in the tach and speedo of an R-sport cluster rotated so that the top speed and redline are at the bottom? I'm assuming there is some sort of logic/ergonomics for racing going on here.

Ready to be enlightened.

I'm going to guess its so you can see the high numbers. I'm tall enough(6 foot) that I can't see the top 1/3 off all my gauges through the steering wheel. Between 45mph - 75mph I just guess how fast I'm going based on where the bottom half of the needle is.

Probably so you wouldn't have to focus on the gauges when shifting/topped out, you could just glance down and know how fast you're going and when to shift.

The R sport cluster gauges were one of VDO series called Aircraft Cockpit which were all fashioned after airplane gauges. They were available with a bezel that had screws on each corner to complete the aircraft look. Volvo saw that I guess and decided to make it their Rsport gauge cluster style as well. Once in awhile I see that aircraft style for sale on ebay.

Edit: The gauge series was called Jet Cockpit.

Because awesome....and my guess is like the others, so you can se the important numbers. With the r sport wheel and cluster in my 245, the tops of the gauges were kinda hidden...especially the volt and oil gauge

I can add you to my build list. Thats actually my pic of the op's cluster I made for him. Pm me with your specs and we can discuss price, etc.

Nice dash! If you notice the tach is not a Volvo gauge. It's one of the jet cockpit gauges. The way the needle is different than what Volvo specified is the giveaway. The gauges to the left of the tach are Volvo rsport with the needles made the way Volvo wanted. Especially the upper two with the fake screw bezels.

?ja. Why there is two different design on small gauges? Did they have too many unsold GT-instruments in stock and decided to paint them black and yellow after switching needle direction? Those are ugly, but I bought R-Sport instrument immediately when I saw one on sale...

I should have given proper photo & rebuild credits in the first post. I can hardly wait to see this in real life.
