Just to make sure, the rubber seal hanging off the vent cover is there to stop water getting into the electricals on the back of the engine when hood is closed, right?

Gotcha. Mine lost most of the little clips that hold it to the grill cover/panel so most of it is falling apart like politician's promises. After having a bit of a hard time starting during yesterday's gentle drizzle, I feel like I should put it back. Thing is I do not know what to use as replacement to those clips.

I'm sure they sell the clips at some place like VP autoparts or swedish car parts.

Those late 7/9 seals used on the back of the hood/firewall junction are tricky. The one on my 92 had almost half the pockets for the plastic clips torn out.... I finally found a clean replacement on a 95 9 series and carefully removed it without breaking those pockets or the clips! Good luck, and if yours has the pockets torn up you might as well look for a better condition seal.
