2008 S40 2.4i 47,000 miles has a loud bearing sound or metal rubbing sound, that just started today after a highway trip, seems to go away when turning right. Now the check engine light is on. I tried checking the code with my cheap obdII reader but it says error. To me it sounds like a failed idler pulley, but I don't see how that would set a check engine light.

Anyone have any ideas? Why does my obdII reader say error?

Just checked and the sound does not go away when parked and the steering wheel is turned in either direction. Noise is loudest in the alternator area. It is not present on start up, slowly starts making noise after a couple seconds and gets louder.
Could it be a vacuum leak?

It is a cracked PVC hose. The sound goes away when the dipstick is pulled up, then returns a couple seconds after the dipstick is seated.

So now the question is what do I need to remove to replace the failed hose, and what parts do I need? It looks like I will need to remove the plastic portion of the intake manifold and replace it's gasket. From what I have found on the web it is the hose from the oil seperator box to valve cover that failed, so I will need that. Any other parts I need or any thing else I should check do while I am in there.
Also the car has a CNA warranty with a $100 dollar deductable, should I fix it myself or let a shop fix it under the warranty?

Is it ok to drive around with the dipstick un-seated to stop the awful noise until it is fixed?

Seems there is a recall on the PVC system upper hose and oil seperator box. Can a tech check if my car is covered under the recall?

Every s40 has an extended warranty on the breather box to 100k I believe. Pull the dipstick and drive to the dealer, they won't cover you can seals if those start leaking due to pressure caused by the system. You should be in and out the dealer in under an hour total if you get someone that halfway knows what they are doing.

Don't count on it being an hour. Warranty time pays 1.6 and if you're just strolling into a decently busy dealer you're going to be there at least two hours.

If you're lucky they have an extra loaner for you.

Thanks guys. I am going to remove the dipstick completly. It will be next saturday before we can get it to the dealer. I will call them monday and hopefully they will have the parts in stock when we get there saturday. Nearest dealer is in St Louis, We always end up making two trips, one for them to diagnose the problem, second trip for them to fix it because they never have parts in stock.
