740 trans issues

I need people to tell me what options for transmissions I have. The current 4 speed push button OD is making some odd noises. If volvo trans? Or if other makes will work such as a ford 5 speed please send any info possible for swap options. Email is gizmo98550@yahoo.com

Can you clarify - what model and year? Is it the transmission that's making the noise or is it the OD? They are separate components. The OD can be rebuilt. Been there - done that. It would be nice to have a T5 and get improved gear ratios and simplify the whole thing. Both Ford and Chevy have used the T5. One has a vertical shift location and the other has the shifter rotated towards the driver 17 degrees (if memory serves). One works better than the other when fitting.

I'm guessing you have an M46. If the transmission is making noise (as opposed to the OD), which gears are worst? Does it make noise in 4th?

It makes more noise as I'm slowing down.. its an 88 740 turbo I think the m46 unit.. so u say a t5 is compatible? From what make? Ford or Chevy.. ide like a longer top gear
