Underdrive pulley

and yes, it's worth it. It's a nice piece, reduces rotating mass, underdrives slightly and looks pretty. Worth every penny :)

Avalanche is from Canada, not Australia.

Hah! Nothing against Avalanche and Dale W (decent folks I assure you), but the speed at which Canada Post moves, it might be better to order it from Australia. I think Canada Post uses a herd of Moose to move the mail. :omg:

The Avalanche performance products look great and I think their underdrive pully looks like there was a ton-o-engineering that went into it. I love shiny aluminum. I'm considering converting to a serpentine system if I can find one that'll bolt on.

I've never had a problem with slow shipping using Canada Post. All my problems come from UPS.

AND if Canada Post is so slow, why don't you use Fed Ex, or UPS, or DHL. We aren't some bum-hump barren place that doesn't have mail services other than Canada post.

Thanks for the input. Why I was thinking Austrailia is pathetic, sorry. I've used u-drive pulleys on a bunch of my other cars and really liked them, but had read very little about their effect on the Volvo.

Reducing rotating mass makes a huge differnce in your car.

And I've never had ANY problems buying from Canada, shipping or otherwise. . .

Gosh folks, I was kidding mostly. I didn't mean to touch a Canada Post nerve there. :-P But my wagon is on jack stands awaiting the arrival of a short throw shifter from Dale. I'm a little anxious to get it back on the road.

That isn't Canada Post's fault so much as it is the sender's...

It's on the way though...

What advantages are there to be had ??

To my mind I can see the alternator / water pump / power steer pumps turning slower .. and possibly loosing capacity which can`t be a good thing .. and would you need a new set of (shorter) belts ??

Or have I got on the wrong boat entirely ..........

Cheers Mike

At idle there will be disadvantages with the water pump and alternator turning more slowly. At anything above idle that ceases to become an issue. In fact, turning the accessories slower at higher engine speeds should provide less parasitic losses, no? Oh yeah...that's one of the advantages...;-)

You will need a set of shorter belts, most certainly.

225 bones though, ouch. Very nice stuff, and yes, canada post can kiss my ass. My aunt sent me a letter, driving + ferry looking at a 5 hour trip, took two weeks to get it lol.

Dale I was seriously just kidding. You gave me a heads-up on the shifter and I really had no problem with it. It arrived today, and thank you for the added features. You certainly didn't have to go to that extent.

As I said earlier, Avalanche is a good outfit, and Dale is good people.

Thanks Again.

I'm running Dale's b230 UD Pulley on my 1990 780.

The only issue, even though it's not really an issue for me, is that my headlights dim if my idle dips below 900rpm. I've noticed this since I installed browntops, installed a catch can, new 3in intake + exhaust, a few other goodies and now have idle problems. I also need to do some stage zero on my electrical system/harness. Heel on the brake, toe on the gas, other foot on the clutch, away we go.

Pro's have already been posted...

less parasitic loss (like dale said)
+
less rotational mass (like Tamnakz said)
=
win!

Have you ever held a stock b230 pulley in your hand? It's a BEAST! :omg:

Maybe Dale can post up the weight of his UD pulley and the weight of a stock pulley?

My B230 pulley weighs 25.7 ounces...I've got one sitting on my scale right now. I don't have a stock pulley to compare it to.

Making one the stock size is certainly an option but because it would need to be milled from larger stock, the cost would increase...

pretty sure the stock pulley is right aroun 7lbs.

maybe a low weight stock size pulley? I have to keep the power to the beats!
yeh, powerin the electrical has been my one concern about running this pulley. I suppose I could just run a higher idle but i was also considering going with a 30% overdrive alt pulley if possible. dale's underdrive pulley is 30% under so that at least would balance out the running of the alternator.
