ZF 8HP-70 eight speed auto transmissions

Top Fuel Dragster still use them.

Top fuel uses a multi-plate centrifugal clutch and one gear. Powerglides aren’t even used in Top Alcohol classes anymore. A lot of the auto drag stuff has shifted to 3 or 4spd autos because they’re faster. You’ll find powerglides in the slower classes that are based more around a “stock” car, or in historic/vintage drag cars.

Power glides have a time and a place outside of the classic car scene, but it’s a few very niche areas where they work better than a manual or an auto trans with more gears. Mostly in race cars where you don’t shift when up to race pace, but need a lower gear for starting out. Super common in dirt circle track racing, but they don’t use a torque converter.

When I first built the V8 Wagon I was running 3.90 gears with 375 HP. Car weighed with me in it@ 3,300 lbs.It would shift out of low @ 65mph in3.8 seconds, tpo end was 118mph,
1/4 mile mid 12 seconds @ 108mph.
Say what you want, but I know what I have.

Lots of diy EV swaps use the powerglide. Its nice because it gives you a reverse gear, and doesn’t require a constantly running pump to work.

Plus, you need to connect it to an automotive-style driveshaft somehow.
The first ev i saw was an MGB, using the 4-speed. Very crude.

Cool. The 5-speed redblock-powered car that I park outside and drive nearly every day with the AC on traps at 107.

If I’m considering an automatic. If I were to choose between an 8HP and a Powerglide, take a wild guess at which I (or any sane person) would pick.

Great performance for its time. Showroom stock cars outperform that these days. Very sophisticated transmission designs are a major factor in that. The BMW M4 Competition is only available with the ZF8HP60 8 speed automatic transmission. The curb weight is ~ 3,900 lb. The M4 has a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. Runs the 1/4 mile in 12 seconds flat and has an electronically limited top speed of 180 mph. All that while still getting 23 mpg on the highway.

Because it keeps the engine right in the maximum power curve. Sorry, 2 gears ain't gonna cut it. Even if it does in your imagination, reality takes over in the real world.
Hey, give gramps a break. He hasn't had his oatmeal yet. I bet that thing can hop a coke can from a start on street tires. 3/4 RACE CAM HOSS

Show me a current, competitive top fuel dragster team using a powerglide. I'll wait.
Drag racing ain't everything, and burning half your power as heat in the torque converter isn't something to aspire to.
You trapped 108? That's cute. I trap 115 with an open diff and shifting 4 times manually. Your car would be faster with a ZF8.

I am strongly considering one for my (previously Dave's, turbomatic2010, R.I.P.) 16v swapped 940 turbo wagon. Hearing that maxxecu can control them is great to know if I can't get it running on its very old by now megasquirt. His dream was a t5z and to take the car drifting, but I know myself and don't want to wreck it, I'd prefer focusing on straight line speed, trying to make it as fast as possible without putting the pistons he and I cut at risk, I think an 8hp would be a great way to eek out some tenths over pushing the power to risky-for-the-rods (or pistons) levels. I'd love to put that t5z in my 740 turbo that I don't care as much about, and take that drifting instead

This was in 1990!
