Explain why a G80 or welded is dangerous. What about a Trutrack
Hello DoucheNozzle,
at first a G80 with a blocked/welded fly gouvernor is in nothing different than a welded diff.
Even more s.h.i.t.t.y
A G80 ist not and never was a LSD. It is a locker, a welded diff is a locker too.
On rainy conditions the car will go straight at slower speeds and will go "steered by the rear" at higher speeds. And you should be aware of a welded diff on a wet circuit.
If you drive with one rear wheel on gras, gravel, or dirt(grain parts of the tyres/slicks) and the other side on tarmac and go full on brake, what will happen?
Both rear calipper will force the one side on the tarmac, the other side isn't able to do anything.
You will have the double force of brake on one wheel in the rear, the wheel will lock immediately and you spin the car. A lot of accidents I have seen with a welded differential.
It is a poor mens modification, and will be worse than a open differential.
A high preload Truetrac is ok, and still not good enough on a race track. Nothing will beat a proper LSD. (Only electronic controlled and operated, none here will use this)
I prefer a open differential instead of a welded or even a wasted while modifyed G80
Good tyres are the rule, soft rear with no ARB. I did drove a 144 with open diff (no money for this at this time, long long ago) really soft springs in the rear and Monroe Niveaus with a compressor and a valve at the dash. We did start with ful fuel cell and "high pressure" at the shocks, and did lower the pressure in the system every lap at the Nordschleife because the weight at the rear got reduced and the "springs" got too stiff.
Not really n the rules(my defination was: the shock is spring!) at this time, nobody recognised.
Did you ever drove a car with a welded differential at slippery roads?
good luck, Kay
someone here damaged on a race track the silver 244 of another member here because of the situation I mentioned above. He had to go hard on brake because in front of him they had an accident.I forgot the name of both. It was a pristine 244 before. I remember there is a vid on youtube about this accident
